I have a 1984 15 hp rude. I changed the gear lube and started it for the first time in 2 years. Everything seemed fine however the next day I had watery brown gear lube leaking from the prop hub. I checked the parts blow up and am assuming the most likely cause would be the two seals between bearing housing and the prop thrust washer?? I'll be tearing it down soon but wanted some input from the experts......Thanks!.....John

You may not want to believe it but that is normal for a 2 stroke engine.--Very noticeable after running on a hose or in a barrel.--------Also is the motor warming up with a working thermostat ?

dont fix it yet to fast !!!

just check your gearcase o?l...if not contaminated then it is has suggested oily juices coming down from the top as unburned Junk trickling out your prop exhaust

Thanks for the responses. I shoulda given a little more information....first, it has never done this before after running in a barrel and the puddle was about 5 inches in diameter....definitely a problem........I will check the gear oil before proceeding....Thanks for the rapids responses! John

As stated most folks will think that is a gearcase seal problem.------The gearcase can be pressure tested to see if there is indeed a leak there.

ok, I drained you gear case again and, it looks fine. I refilled it, run it for 15 minute in the barrel and will see what it does this time. I sure do want to think it's a 2 stroke thing. I'm going sell the motor and the inflatable dinghy it's on and don't want to give anybody a raw deal. I'm old school and honesty gives me a better nights sleep.....thanks again for the responses......John

If it's gear lube it will smell like gear lube if it is exhaust residue it will smell gassy.

To be sure about it take the motor to somebody that can pressure and vacuum test it. Takes all the guess work out.
