Leaking Lower Unit After Repair

I just had the propeller shaft replaced on my 94 Mercury Mariner Magnum 3 150hp (0d290081). Afterwards we ran it on the muffs... Everything seemed ok. Two days later I trimmed it down to finish cleaning the hull and noticed a puddle was forming under the unit. It was coming from a chunk that came off when the carrier housing finally broke free for the mechanic. He said it was ok because it was before the threads. I trust him but I've had a few people that are saying different and want another professional opinion. He said that I needed to replace the seal inside there (#69 on the parts explosion for my engine). What do you all think?

Isn't it neat how when people break things it's always 'oh it's OK, it doesn't affect anything'?

should if case and other parts are good...

don't think (from tha pic) tha chunk has anything ta do with tha leak but prop shaft and carrier seals are "usually" tha norm with tha change.. after any work on a gear case is done ya always pressure test it ta avoid things like this.....

Where can I purchase a pressure tester or how do I perform a pressure test on the LU. I have a master cooling system pressure tester for vehicles but I'm sure that isn't going to help me. I have a lot of mechanical knowledge, but since I've never worked on an outboard, I'm not too comfortable yet to start pulling it apart ya know. I know there's a lot of similarities between the two so I am comfortable enough to perform a pressure test if someone can explain it to me. Thank you in advance.

That chunk wont cause a leak...either wrong water pump base or driveshaft seal installed...

Why were you replacing the propshaft? Often gear cases are damaged in impacts and when the bearing carrier is removed they end up being out of round. Sometimes they cannot be resealed. You mentioned the mechanic had some trouble removing the carrier.

The prop shaft was bent at the end. How would I tell if the carrier is out of round. And how can I see where the leak is coming from especially the pump housing... Do I drop the Lu and do the pressure test?
