I have oil leaking out of here. It looks like the oil from the lower unit. Here is a picture and I circled where the oil is coming out from.
I tried to winterize the engine by running all of the gas and water out of it. After doing this I noticed the oil coming out. It might be normal. It might happen when the motor is ran in the water I don't know.606924744_tp.jpg

That is the water intake for the water pump. If oil is coming out of there then it may be fuel mixture If that is indeed what it is then you may have a leaking exhaust gasket or the adapter plate is cracked or corroded. It is also possible for the waterpump base to have a failed seal on the driveshaft. Does the oil smell like rear end oil of a car? STINKY? If not then again it would be fuel oil. Determining what kind of oil it is will help determine where it,s coming from and what might need to be done to fix it.View attachment 176791 The driveshaft seal is located in the middle of the water pump base,

If oil is coming out of the water intake, then its the seal leaking on the waterpump base. So the lower will need to be dropped.

I am very sure it is the oil I put in the lower unit. It has that funky smell.

So no oil of any kind should ever come out of there is my first question.

#2 No running in a barrel or on muffs would not cause this problem. The seal more than likely just wore out. Probable cause lack of maintaining the LU by regularly changing the oil and inspecting for water intrusion and metal particals on the drain plug.

Re: Leaking? lower unit oil?

Thanks for the answers. The engine is 27 years old so I bet it just wore out. I got the boat in Jan last year. I changed the LU oil first thing. About halfway through the summer during a pre ramp inspection I discovered the LU bottom drain screw was missing. Upon investigation I discovered the screw where I park the boat in puddle of oil. So I am pretty sure I never ran it without oil in the LU.

it,s not a hard job just get a complete waterpump kit base plate housing and gasket. the worst prt is getting the base out, but with a little patience and some resorcefullness it can be done for about 3 hr,s and 60 BUCKS
