leaking oil into water

Yesterday at the ramp I started the motor and she ran great for about 4-5 min. Then i went into the car to check the time, and when i came back the motor had shut off. I tried to restart but no go. After about 15 minutes of trying I noticed some oil droplets in the water. could this be caused by putting too much oil in my oil/gas mix? I have a 40hp 1964 evinrude twin. What should the ratio be? When I bought it last Summer I was told by the dealer that I should put 16oz. of oil for every 6 gallons of premium gasoline. (But now I'm second guessing if that's actually what I heard.)

Thanks,
Tom

If you cranked the engine extensively and it did not start, then the oil in the water is probably from the fuel/oil mix going through the engine. Does not mean you mixed it improperly.

What you saw in the water was probably oil & gas.

Yeah there was a little gas too. How do I correct this?

You actually have the engine start. You are aware that the oil ends up in the water regardless?

An engine of that vintage is probably no less than 50:1 . . . it sounds like 16 oz per 6 gallons of gas is right on.

Well I know that some gets into the water, but I had never seen oil droplets like that before. Plus I had an onlooker starting to get irritated that I was polluting the environment and that if a few drops of oil got into the water it would "kill half the lake".

I think the reason you haven't seen that much before is because the motor is usually running and burning most of it, but because you were cranking for a long time without it actually firing you were pushing unburnt fuel/oil mix thru the motor. I don't think that is a symptom of your problem just a result of it, but I am by no means an outboard expert. Good luck sorting it out.

Yea, those tree huggers are everywhere, so you have to be careful. I'm not sure I would have tried to start the engine for 15 minutes . . . and that may have been more the issue . . too many tries. If it does not start in a reasonable amount of time, it isn't going to, so it's Miller time.

Sounds like you are delivering fuel to the cylinders, so start with checking for adequate spark.

Ok I tried today, and I think I found the issue. When my local boat place winterized the motor last year they turned the mixture knob allllll the way to the right. I spent 2 hours one day last year getting it on the perfect setting, so that's what I'll be doing tomorrow. Thanks for the input everyone.

I think I'd find a different boat place to winterize the mtr. There's no reason to change any adjustments when winterizing a mtr.

I understand what you're saying, but my dad has been going to this place since the 70's, and I've gotten to know them pretty well since I bought the boat last June. I don't know for sure that they turned the knob, but I did not leave it all the way to the right. We have some vandals who like to do weird things. Like turn our boat lights on at night, or flip our car windshield wipers out. They've even moved our neighbors basketball hoop to another part of there driveway. I don't think it's them though because unless you know how to take the engine housing off without light then I don't see how they could've done it. Basically, I don't know who did this.

At least they're 'gentle' vandals and no real damage... Yet...

There's no guns up here in Canada... We like the gentle vandals...!

I suppose if you have to have vandals the "gentile" ones are the kind you want.
