Leaking raw water pump

Hello

I have a 96 penta 5.8. The raw water pump began weeping late in the season. It only drips when the engine is running. There are not cracks, gasket is fine. It is weeping form where the shaft exits the housing. I am told this is not repairable and I have to buy a whole new pump.

Any thoughts on the matter?

Thanks

Vinny

You heard right. Replace the pump. It's also worn out. Notice all the grooves in the brass housing where the impeller runs?

I am cool with that. I looked into it more and the grooves are there and the unit is stock from 1996.

It owes me nothing.

Thanks again for the second opinion Don it reassures me that I am on the right path.

Raw water pump choices

Raw water pump choices

Hello again.

1995/96 FLPHUR 5.8

I should have asked earlier...

I have seen 2 raw water pumps advertised on line.

The first is a Volvo direct replacement.

The second is a Sherwood replacement (SHE G9901) that is completely rebuildable.

I like the idea that I can replace the bearing and seal over time.

Any and all comments welcome...

Re: Leaking raw water pump

My raw water pump from an AQ205 A was relatively easy to strip and repair. New faceplate as old one was worn and the seals between the impellar housing and bearing were easily removed / checked and turned out to be OK . The only point at which I would have given in was had the bearings been damaged or rusty. As it is a good clean through and a load of grease and the pump is as new.

Common problem; I kept replacing the sealing ring but now finally intend to replace the pump this weekend. I bought the VP OEM and am only disappointed that it's raw brass and not painted the shiny red of my '02 stock pump.

Re: Leaking raw water pump

Thanks all. I will replace the pump since it is old, worn and has served me well. I would like mine to be black to match my engine. Not sure how the crank pump will match up?

Thanks once again.

If you have the belt driven one, I would consider going with the crankshaft mounted one. Easier to service, cheaper to replace, and no belt to break.

JMHO.

Keep in mind he has a Ford motor. The pulleys are deeper on some models and you can't mount them. The pump you linked to is for a Chevy engine.

True, sorry I wasn't clearer. I had the Volvo chevy block and that's the pump I used.
