leaking rivits

I have a 89 19 ft. Sea Nymph which has some leaking rivits, some of which I believe are holding the stabilizer ribs on the bottom of the boat. Seeing as the boat weighs 1125 lbs. I am looking for solutions to fix this problem without taking the boat off the trailer and propping it up in my yard to work on it! I read some old posts here from he4givs and he had a permanent solution to it. He used aluminum welding rods with a hand held propane torch. He bought a tube of 18 rods from Weeks Dist. for 35 bucks 1-800-547-9353. Regular propane didn't get hot enough to melt the rods, He was advised to use the yellow bottle which I believe is a hotter mixture. In his post he advised they did a wonderful job. He did his whole boat and had rods left over. Also a post about 3M 5200. which they said was a good fix. I was just wondering if I could use the alum. rods while still on the trailer. (welding upside down) which I would think is very tough!. I want to fix the leaking rivits permanetly as they are a real pain in the rectum if you know what I mean. Any suggestion would be helpful, or if anyone has tried this method, please notify me. Thanks in advance.

Jersey Bill

Re: leaking rivits

I had the same problem with my 16' waco rivited aluminum jonboat. I took my boat to Rhino linings. They are the ones that spray the tough stuff in the bed of trucks. It worked great on the inside of my boat, and it made moving around in the boat alot quieter. They even had the color I wanted. I used a light grey because the black would just cook you in the summer time.
You cant hurt this stuff..."No mre leaks" Ever.
cost was $120.00
Suzuki40

Re: leaking rivits

Suzuki40:
Does your boat have a floor in it? Mine does and I would have to tear out the whole floor, the console and the live well (40 gal.) Also I would have the flotation (foam) that is glued into the bottom and sides under the floor, I couldn't get at the rivits from the inside of the boat that way. The only way I can attact the problem is from the outside, doing all the rivits and seams on the bottom.

Jersey Bill
