I have noticed that the stator is leaking some black substance onto the timer base area. I have also noticed the volt meter stays around 14.5 to 15.0. Is this voltage too high and could this cause the leaking or is the stator just going bad. I haven't verified that the meter is accurate on the voltage reading. I recently installed a new timer base. The stator had been leaking before and has also leaked on the new timer base. I have checked the connections, everyting is good. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Leaking stator, 1990 evinrude 200HP

The 14.5/15v is fairly normal. The stator is a two fold component having a series of small coils which pertain to the charging system (alternator). The larger two black coils at the rear of the stator supply approximately 300 AC volts to the powerpack(s) capcitor(s) in order to energize the ignition.

Unfortunately that 35 amp stator runs quite hot and in time suffers the breakdown (meltdown) that yours is experiencing. This results in a voltage drop to the powerpack(s) which results in weak and eventually no ignition (spark).

Bottom line.... replace that stator before it fails completely.

Re: Leaking stator, 1990 evinrude 200HP

Thanks Joe. My boat is about 140 miles away and I plan to go tommorow and remove the stator. While shopping on line for a stator, I saw on one website (maxrules.com) that I need to check the rect./reg., that it may be the root cause for the stator failure. I have a clymer shop manual but as of yet, I don't see how to check the regulator. What do you suggest, could it be a problem?

Thanks,

Mike

Try looking at page 41 or thereabout for your regulator/rectifier test. Cranking discharge test.

Just FYI, I just replaced both my stator and regulator/rectifier and I'm seeing 15v pretty steady, so I think that'll be ok. 1988 E175 35Amp water cooled system as yours is.
