Leaking V/P sea water pump - likely suspects?

Hi,

Took my '96 Volvo/Penta out for the first thing this season yesterday. All went well, except for a leak coming from the sea water pump.

Its about time for a new impeller, so I was going to get an impeller kit for it.

But, I thought that I was seeing water coming from the pulley end of the pump. That would imply a shaft seal. Is this a common failure? I didn't see this as a replaceable part on the various online shops with drawings.

I'd just like to avoid doing this job twice if I can avoid. Fortunately, access isn't too bad, but...

Your thoughts/comments? Thanks in advance.

Later,

johnbo

There are no bearing and seal kits for those pumps. Time for a new pump.
And YES, like anything with a shaft, they leak eventually.

Thanks Don,

I'll get a new pump ordered. I'll go double check the leak, while the boat is on the muffs, just to be sure that the leak is coming from the front end of the pump.

I thought that I was sure before, but I'm not $250 worth of sure.

Thanks again,

johnbo
