1976 25hp rude leaks oil out exhaust housing and consequently upper drain hole in gearhousing. rebuilt waterpump, and decarbed engine. removed engine from water. let set and unburned oil (it appears) runs all over the place. didn't have the problem before hand, not to this magnitude. i have read many posts and all they say is "don't worry", put a pad down or this is normal. i am going to guess that if someone bought this in 1976 and it did this , they would be a bit upset. so if you can help with a real answer i would deeply appreciate it . could part of a seal dropped out when i dropped the lower unit . i did put a new drive o ring on the driveshaft when i installed it. this is not gear oil.oh yeh , i am bad with this netiquette thing so please don't enter in if you can't handle straight talk . i have run across thin skinned people here before and would prefer not spend my time apologizing. some of us just don't have the gift of gab.

Is it still running well? If the lower crank seal (or any crankcase seals) were damaged, it would not run correctly . Many times after a decarb, dislodged and liquefied crap just runs out of the engine for a few hours of run time. The liquefied carbon in the exhaust system will come out in the water and make a huge mess.

carb/float needle mis-adjusted, disconnect fuel line, when sitting. also when you have the motor tilted. also could be exhaust housing is carboned up. it is not unusual for motors to drip water/oil gew, if store upright after usage.

Never leaked before, tilted or not. Not the carb, rebuilt it per (secret file), that is where I picked up the decarb idea. Didn't realize I needed to run it so long to clear it up. Maybe I'm just cautious. These old boat motors are new to me, I'm just glad you guys have this site or I would be lost. So, let me get this straight, take it back to the river, open it up, until I can see the sky again. Both of you, I really appreciate the help. With any luck they will think I'm fogging mosquitoes. Before I go, do you have anymore advice?

there's a hose (supposed to be) running from the air silencer to the crankcase, to recover the oil that gathers on the airbox cover.

part #4 on the diagram below:

Do you troll through a no wake zone for a considerable time before getting back to the ramp ????

If you just did a decarb, you will need to run it for a while to clear all the crap out of it. It took about 45 min of high speed running to clear out the last one I did.

yes I troll but it was not a problem before the decarb. build up ,i understand. the fuel pump is a possibility. but, I believe I will run it a little more. if I can avoid these afternoon storms. I will post again as soon as I have looked at the possibilities. thanks again guys.

Pull the plugs & see if one of them is black & oily. Is the oil running out the vent black ?

If that was the first decarb ever done, there will be lots of melted sludge. Running it your best bet. I'd decarb again after a couple tanks.

Re: leaks to much (unburned fuel)

Ok guys. I have been back for 2 hours now and no sludge. I pronounce this engine cleeeeean. I pulled plugs when I got back, look ok; engine ran strong and cool. ran it for 45 minutes. pulled the cowling and placed my hand on the engine for a 4 count ,then went to the carb and it was cold. Fired that puppy up and idled 1/2 mile to ramp. As for the( no power ) post. I can't help you there, unless your referring to gunk; in a 2 cycle the oil and gas have already been mixed at the point of which you speak. You cannot get just gas from there; it has to be gas and oil. In which case, you need to talk to Tashasdaddy. You said it lightens up when you remove the fuel line that implies you have a carb problem; probably the float is set wrong. Once again, thanks guys: life is good and my little world is saved, nanoo nanoo.
