Leaky Hatches

I have two round inspection hatches on my deck (Probably about 8 inches across) that are constantly leaking. They are the pry-up kind with a black, rubber gasket. Though leaking, it's not a lot. There's always water on my gas tank, however, and lots of condensation on the bilge. Since the boat is always outside (covered), I'd like to keep the bilge dried.

Does anyone know of replacement hatches that are leak-proof, or, is there a sealant that can be used on the rubber gaskets (not permanent, obviously). Thanks much!

Re: Leaky Hatches

I have the same condition on my boat.Although I use both the screw type and pry type of inspection port.I have never had any leaks with either, although the screw type can give a tighter seal.Bad condensation is always a problem in sealed compartments. When I cover my boat I leave the plates out(open) to allow better air flow.I also leave them open on good(dry) days when at the dock.If you think water is getting past the seal, try applying a light coat of oil to the gasket(like 3in1 or auto oil).Do not use sealant on the gasket. The gaskets are replaceable if needed."Beckson" makes high quality deck plates/gaskets.If Iboats does not have them, try Ebay or West Marine.Good luck. ;)

Thanks for the response Reel Appeal. I'm pretty sure they're leaking, since the water on the tank was salty. The boat's only in the water when fishing. I may try a coat of oil to see if that helps.

I have the same problem on my Mako and discovered that it was not the pry up plate that was leaking. It was the base that it snaps into that was leaking.I applied a windshield sealant that was for hard to find leaks,it was not too thick so it traveled inside the fixture and sealed it. Good luck !!Charlie
