Without seeing it, hard to say.....
JB weld might work, but if you have it in one spot then the rest is probably not too good either.....JK

Re: leaky oil pan

yip theres a bit of corosion around it but seems to be just under the bung but there are no clear signs of a hole or crack, replaced the two washers on the bung and tried some liquid metal will see if it works tomorro when it sets...fingers crossed.

It's Less than 1/2 the work of pulling the engine out of a Car...........

Re: leaky oil pan

rob935, figure out how you are going to hoist that motor high enough to get it out of the boat and then down to an engine stand. You guys have used tractors and others have built custom stands. Just something to think about before you have buddies over to help you and can't get it out of the boat and onto the stand.

Re: leaky oil pan

I would say that you do not need to remove the engine from the boat completely.....
Just propped on something solid with enough room to work.....
I've seen/done that one before.....JK

Re: leaky oil pan

Just a thought, order a new oil pan and gaskets before starting this undertaking. Then repaint or recoat the pan to keep this from happening again. I don't recomend repairing the pan since you really don't want to take a chance of your repair failing far away from the dock and dumping all your oil in the bilge.

Re: leaky oil pan

i just recently replaced my oil pan gasket from cork to rubber and i got lucky because i propped the engine up on blocks and removed all exterior parts on one side of block and slid pan out that way might not be so lucky for you not sure of the setup you have mines a 2.5ltr mercruiser 120

Re: leaky oil pan

I had to replace the oil pan in my boat, I've got a Volvo 280 drive & a 305 chevy small block and it really was easy to pull the engine out, alot faster than a car motor, just make sure you have all the parts on hand to do the work and be aware of any surprises that may pop up, here's some photos of my oil pan project http://photos.yahoo.com/jastacey@sbcglobal.net
Just beware that some oil pans for a car or truck will not fit boat applications, that's what I found out in getting a oil pan for my engine, had to get my from volvo, and the oil pan was really deep

Re: leaky oil pan

thanks guys will bear all your advice in mind, was lookin at getting a tractor to hoist it out as i have tried to remove the oil pan already but there is no clearance on either side of the engine bay...so may only need to lift up a foot or so but think when i get that far i may as well take it out completely and give it a good goin over, will let you know how i get on many thanks again..

Re: leaky oil pan

I would absolutely not try to repair it. I have replaced a pan while it is in the boat by jacking up the engine slightly.

If I had to do it again, I would yank the engine. Very hard to tell if you have the pan gasket on correctly if you try to replace with the engin in the boat.

Re: leaky oil pan

yip i have taken the pan off but it doesnt have enough clearance to get it out , had a hell of a time trying to get it back on with the gasket in place , wont make that mistake again lol...is only a five minute job once you can access it with the engine out, finding it difficult and extremely expensive to get somebody to take the engine out and put it back in....

Re: leaky oil pan

I just had both motors removed and then re-installed in my boat for $240 to replace my couplers. I did all the work preparing the motors in advance and replaced the couplers mysef, but I thought it was a very reasonable price.
