lean / rich cable 9.5hp

I know a few weeks ago I asked a similar question but I am still having trouble......<br /><br />The lean / rich cable on my motor is locked up good! It will turn fairly easily on the carb end but it is tighter than a drum on the front of the motor where the knob goes for fast adjustment.<br /><br />I was told there should be a nut or something to loosen it but I just don't see it anywhere, also the fittings look like they are brass and I don't want to ruin them any more than I already have trying to loosen this darn thing.<br /><br />Any help would be great.<br /><br />Thanks, Chris

If you have a 1964/65 9.5hp Evinrude/Johnson, there would be a brass packing packing jam nut. If you have a 1966/73 9.5hp Evinrude/Johnson, there is no brass packing jam nut.<br /><br />Note that to obtain a proper answer, we need the proper engine identification (Year, Make, Hp).<br /><br />The shaft on the 1966/73 Evinrude/Johnson 9.5hp that the nylon adjusting knob goes on is simply inserted thru the front cover of the engine.<br /><br />I'd assume that corrosion has jammed the shaft. Tap it out of the cover, clean out whatever you find, then reinsert the shaft.

Thanks for the info, but I went as far as soaking it with wd40, penetrating oil and hitting it with a hammer, nothing is working, I am affraid to cut it off all togeather because I have called several dealers that say they can not get that part anymore.<br /><br />Any other ideas???<br /><br />Chris

Look closely at that shaft close to the outside front of the cover. There may still be the factory "E" Ring that snaps into a groove on the shaft which would keep it from moving into the engine compartment.

oh, I also wanted to ask you what a good compression for this motor is? I bought a nice profesional tester and both cylinders are sitting at 75 psi, is this ok? when should I rebuild?<br /><br />Thanks chris

I think your pretty close right now, above a 100 is good at 75 the sun is setting so to speek.

The compression reading on that engine depends on the gauge (some vary), and the speed in which you can turn the engine over. The reading 0f 75 or so isn't bad and the engine may run for many years at that reading (toss up really).<br /><br />Sometime when you're not going to be using the engine for a day or two, lay it down with the plugs facing up. Remove the s/plugs and have the pistons evenly in the up position, then spray some engine tuner.... some kind of carbon removal spray on top of the pistons. If any piston ring might be somewhat stuck, that should help free it.

Chris,<br /><br />I should have been more clear with my response sorry for any missunderstanding, I was just implying that your motor needed some attention. Several factors can determine the #'s you have including the gauge and the method in which it was tested, for the best reading it should be tested after the motor has reached normal operating temp and with the throttle set to WOT. I would be more concerned with a wide variation between cylinders.
