just picked up a Gruman 15' fisherman with 70hp 3cylinder Mercury 1980. Motor needs to be checked to see if its worth keeping! Got it turning over with key. Will shift fwd & reverse. Seems to have good compression. I injected a syringe of gas and oil into each cylinder and poured gas in carbs. Hooked up gas tank and turned it over. Did not even sputter?! I do not have a manual. Looking help with what next? Looking for manual and ignition info?

Don't think because you added some fuel and tried to start it and it didn't, that there is something wrong....yet. Outboard engines are not like vehicle engines. You could have easily had a kill switch that was in the kill position. And there are so many other reasons as well. So look at the engine manual and start reading and understanding before throwing in the towel on the engine. JMHO

For your peace of mind, take the combo for a water ride at full hammer down, if motor doesn't miss at all will have fun. Be aware that starting an engine on muffs, barrel or water at neutral doesn't say much about the motor healthy cond as running at full hammer down, are 2 different running scenarios..

These old things are great...but each owner gets to know their engines sweet spots. There is a knack to starting these things.
Some like the throttle set open and a bit of choke unt she fires...choke off and throttle open at the ready to back off...some full choke and little throttle.
Have a play if you are getting all the life signs.
