Leaving in gear

I've recently heard that I should be leaving the motor in forward gear when trailering and generally when not in use. Can anyone confirm this and is there a reason why.

Re: Leaving in gear

Ive heard that from years ago. Their theory was that the propshaft will be spinning (when in neutral from the wind turning the prop) and is not being oiled nor cooled from the water. But its submerged in oil so I never understood it. And actually the higher the motor rpm is the more oil is thrown away from the gear set.

I must admit I never tow the boat long distances with the prop on. But thats because I dont want someone to wander off with it if we stop.

Good luck!
