Leaving Tank Connected to Engine? (Merc 9.8)

All last summer I left my tank connected to the motor (via the bulb pump tube thingy). Even when it was sitting on the side of my brick house, in the sun with a tarp over it.

I bought it all used (boat/trailer/motor/3 gal gas can) and wondered if it's hurting anything or if I should disonnect it after use or perhaps even remove the gas tank from the boat(fearing an explosion....)?

Actually, I think I started doing this after the little black stem, that has the spring on it (on the motor) where you connected the fuel line, popped out one time and I stuck it back in, just to have it fall back out and then I was afraid I'd lose it, so I just left it connected all the time.

Thanks for your assistance.

I leave the tank in the boat and the fuel line connected all the time during the season, but disconnect it in the winter and change the fuel before the next season. I don't have any problems doing that. By the way I have a 9.8 as well.

I would discard the fuel after a few mths or add fuel stabiliser..
If you leave it connected, give the bulb a sueeze from time to time to keep the carbs full.
