I have a leeky lower unit on a 89' evenrude 150xp. When i hook it up to the hose it shoot water out the crese between the lower unit and the i guess the shaft housing in the middle on both sides. I tightened the bolts but nothing got better. Is their a gasket i need or is the water pump leaking or am i not even itn the ballpark. next i did a compression test yesterday and i got the following
65 65
70 70
68 70
is this okay i know it is the ration between them but im not sure if it is the the tester is week or the low reading is just the compresson of the cylinders. One more thing is how do i test the rpm gage. I have good ground and ignition also the lights work but when the motor is running i have notting on my test light when i touch the wire used for the tack???

thank you

the leak is perfectly normal, for muffs. get another compression tester and do it again, did you turn the motor over 4 or 5 revolutions, when testing. have you check if your motor is charging your battery. the rectifier, charges the battery, and is also involved with the tach pulse.

Those compression numbers are fine for an '89 V6, Robert. Well within the 10% span. Those late 80s V6s usually show lower psi than local rebuilders claim you must have.

Your engine is not sick, unless there is something you haven't told us.

Need more info about you tach question. Do you have a tach? Is it not reading rpm?
