2001 150 Yamaha ox66 fuel injected. A real DUH! Last fall while winterizing, had an overheat alarm with the muffs on. Shut off right away. Put hose to flusher and left water running to cool engine and would turn key on to see if alarm had reset, and then turn key off. After a minute it did reset, but I left the key on. After charging the battery the next day, it fired right up. Any ideas on possible problems I caused by leaving the key on that need some springtime attention ?
I think I'll keep the key in my pocket.

Re: Left key on

most likly nothing with the motor but why did it overheat on the flusher, that is abnormal and may indicate a problem.
with key on power the ECU is powered up but doing nothing, the oil control is powered up but cannot transfer oil automatically without an RPM signal, the injector red/yellow wires are powered but have no ground, the fuel pump has no ground and shuts off after 3 seconds if the ECU has no RPM signal. the main relay will draw power until battery voltage drops below 5 v then it shuts down. most likly no damage was done.
other than possibly shortening battery life.

Re: Left key on

Thank you gentelmen for the replies. I was wondering about the overheat. The only thing I could think of was the flusher only has a water outlet on one side. The volume of water from the telltale slowly decreased, then the overheat. I thought perhaps not enough pressure. Maybe time for another impeller?

Rodbolt, congrats on 10,000. You have made a difference in many folk's life, just by being willing to share your expertise in a fun way.

Re: Left key on

check/replace the pump if it is over 2 years old.
but the most common reason for overheat at idle or on a flusher is the pressure valve grommet is distorted from corrosion.
its a 200 hour or yearly check.

I'm on it. Thanks again. I'll pop open my manual tonight and track it down.

Re: Left key on

I find it common for the 150s to trip the overheat alarm on muffs, but not in the water. You need muffs that feed from both sides and the alarm won't sound. Don't ask me why.

I have heard of that before Willy. I'm going to do the pressure valve grommet so it doesn't poop out when Olive Oyl and I go crappie fishing. Nice to know I can always borrow a hamburger from you guys. :)

Boat safe

willy
if it was a 4 stroke 150 I would agree
the 2 stroke, 2.6L motor will dig a hole in concrete with its pee stram on a flusher. if it dont its broke.
or the water supply was insuficent due to lack of turning the valve to wide open.
