ok I bought a Grew boat a month ago and it says Grew 194 on the side and was told it is 19 foot 4 inch. But when I measured the boat from bow tip to stern I get 17.5? are they inclueding the merc leg as part of the measurement?
Re: length doesn,t match hull numbers ??? school me please
My understanding is that the model number and its relationship to LOA is a "ballpark" at best. For example, my 293 is actually something like 28'-10" LOA, and the "3" means it is the cuddy version as opposed to the open bow which had the designation 292 (May have been 296, can't remember for sure.)
check out some of the under 16 foot boats, some are pushing over 17. (under 16 foot gets by some regulations, so if a mfg marks it 15.5 feet instead of 16 feet, they just saved themselves a little coin. under 16 is usually cheaper to title/register/insure also.)
Re: length doesn,t match hull numbers ??? school me please
In MA under 15' and you don't need a title. That saves you money right there. My Freedom 170 is advertised as 17' however when you look at the printed specifications and actually measure it you find it is 16' 7"
Re: length doesn,t match hull numbers ??? school me please
Some measurements are around the gunwale....when they do it that way they seldom if ever tell you. I remember back in the '50's when wooden boat kits were popular they told you it was measured that way in their sales catalog.

I hear rumors, Sea Ray was notorious for this in recent years. The 26', became the 27', then the 28'... So the same basic sized boat went from being called a 26 to a 28 and possibly a 29.
You can tell when you are aboard them. A boat called a 30' now-a-days seems to have less room than a 30'er from days gone by.
I think that's true because they apparently add the swim platform and the bow rail.....well they ARE part of the boat.....as mentioned, some may even include the outdrive if it has one because it IS part of the boat.
Re: length doesn,t match hull numbers ??? school me please
ok well I think this is what they have done as well inclueded the out drive as part of the measurement . thanks for all the input on this post nice to hear what everyone else has delt with
Re: length doesn,t match hull numbers ??? school me please
My Chris Craft 283 is 27 ft 11 inches at the waterline. I know that LOA should be measured from the bow without the pulpit to the stern not including the swimstep, unless the swim step is molded as part of the hull. My swim step looks molded, but it is actually bolted on. I get 33 ft when I measure from the pulpit to the end of the swim step. Take those away and I'm at about 30. Sea Ray today would probably call mine a 31. Sounds bigger that way.
Re: length doesn,t match hull numbers ??? school me please
Mine registers as a 21' per Carver. It's LOA is 24'9" with the deck and bow pulpit. NADA says it's a 23'. I moor next to a Maxum 25 and we're the same length. Go figure.
Re: length doesn,t match hull numbers ??? school me please
Seems that it also depends on the year mfg'd, sometimes they seem to measure along the rubstrip or include pulpits/swim platforms etc., In my yacht club, there's 2 boats that the builders entitled as "26'" 1 is earlier 80's and way bigger than the other which was built in the 90's
Re: length doesn,t match hull numbers ??? school me please
My Carver is a 3687 however the LOA is 41'7 from pow pulpit to back swim step that is molded into the body (not an add on) you would think by the model #3687 it'd be only 36' but I got 41+ (go figure)

Also a beamier (is that a word) boat will feel larger inside. Another thing older boats seemed to have was beam. Newer boats tend to be narrower, whereas the older ones tend to be wider.
