maybe put a tarp over your work to create a tent and put a 500w halogen light under it? or just aim the light right at your epoxied surface and move it as things cure up. i've had to use the auxiliary heat approach more than a few times, incl when i've mixed a "cold" batch (not enough hardener) and it doesn't want to cure.

Yeah, I might get out there with my heat gun just to help things along. It's all the wood from my project going the length of my driveway, so I may give it a shot. Thanks.

wow! you sir, most likely just saved me quite a headache. I'm planning to install a motor friday, not only a headache but I may have derailed my first splash, which is set for sunday (i hope). just measured, mine doesn't fit either if the motor is installed

Glad I could help.

Worse case scenario, you could have disconnected the steering cable at the helm to give you enough slack to get the ram in the transom tube. That's what I did when I had to replace my broken cable this spring.

Just had a good one today. The admiral called multiple times, I set the paint gun down it fell and cracked the cup. I picked it up didnt realize it was cracked and wet primer went all over my shop floor, my freshly prepped consoles, and my freshly painted black trailer of course it was white primer.

While running the old Holiday on muffs, I looked down and realized the hose had somehow came off..I jumped down to see the muff side thread screw thingy was split in half so I sat there for 15 minutes holding the hose to the muffs while hoping somebody in the house would come check on me as I yelled for assistance...hindsight would have been to shut the motor off while in the boat. Too easy I guess.

Oh geez I have so many....

On the Jupiter:

- I put a pressure treated deck in it. Hadn't found iboats and didn't know any better. Good news (for the current owner) is this was right
around the time of the changeover so it might not have been the worst (wood was much darker green than the newer stuff).
- Didn't leak check it before installing the new deck. Boat leaked like a sieve.
- Put up with leaking for two years before sticking a hose in the bilge one day in my driveway which immediately revealed a streaming pin hole under the knee-brace. Quick slathering of JB on the hole and like 80% of my leakage was stopped.
- Painted the boat with rattle cans. Ended up buying so many friggin' cans of paint I could have paid someone to spray it for less. Plus the finish sucked.
- Used the boat with a completely rotted transom for 2 or 3 years. It was hard-core reinforced with a piece of angle iron fastened along the entire splashwell but all the through-bolts leaked. I actually went to the trouble of removing the outboard to replace just the outside motor plate! What a waste of time. Went through it all over again a year later when I properly replaced the transom and omitted the outer plate. I was on iboats by this time.
- Tested the motor not on muffs but in a bucket. Bucket wasn't deep enough (I thought I only needed to cover the intakes) so the motor got hot. Wasted trip to the shop to find out nothing was wrong with it.
- My original trailer was in need of some rehab. Got a good deal on a trailer on CL and decided I would rehab that one instead and then switch the boat over. That one was fully boxed and had rust issues in the tubes towards the back and was just generally nowhere near as heavy duty as the original one was. I was committed to the dumb idea though and spent tons of time and manpower on fixing up the crap trailer and sold the sturdy one for like $50. Spent tons of money on parts to get it properly fitted to the boat. In retrospect I probably still would have ok to buy the crap trailer but I should have switched the boat to that one right away and rehabbed the solid trailer and switched back. Could have likely sold it for what I paid for it.

On the SS:

- Didn't prime when painting it and the paint fell off.
- My seat post doublers didn't quite match up with where the pedestals ended up getting mounted (not too bad, just 2 of the lag bolts aren't into doubled wood)
- Bought lounge seats and jump seats for the SS since that's what was in the Jupiter. Didn't even think about how the windshield on the SS was much further back so there was no room for all that seating. Cost me a pretty penny in shipping to send the loungers back and get buckets instead.
- Didn't reinstall the consoles and line up the windshield prior to re-making my console wood panels. Almost had to remake the port side. Probably should have to be honest. My windshield alignment could be better.
- Did something to bend the crap out of my one windshield "leg". It was quite a bit of work to get it about 80% straightened.
- Waited till after the boat was painted to try to pull out the old transom. It was seriously swelled in there and I tried all manner of silliness to try to get it out including basically hanging the boat from it and jumping up and down in the boat which almost flipped the boat and scratched the new paint (LOL like that mattered in retrospect) :facepalm:
- Didn't get my trailer 100% squared away before putting the boat back on it. Probably should have sanded and painted it but at minimum should have gotten the axle replaced while the thing was empty.
- Bought a steering cable that was a foot too short. It cuts the corner pretty good in the back. It works but I should have a longer one.
- Bought a gas tank on CL that I didn't end up having room for.
- Didn't account enough for the thickness of the carpet for my hatch doors. Had them all made and carpeted and they didn't fit. The carpet glue was super strong so I couldn't just trim the existing hatches, had to make all new ones.
- Didn't make my front casting deck thick enough around the hatches. It's all cracked now and will need to be redone. Currently just reinforced with 2x4's.
- Replaced my rotted bow "keystone" piece with PVC trim board but in order to save work the new piece isn't jammed all the way into the gunwales like the original so my bow is bouncy. Going to have to replace that.
- Drilled 4 big holes for my bow mount trolling motor to mount it. It works great but I've decided to upgrade to a quick-release mount that uses different holes. So I'll have 4 big useless holes to deal with.
- Bought a big awesome multi-function gauge that apparently isn't compatible with my motor. The trim gauge is backwards and the temp isn't accurate.
- Slid along a dock a bit when coming in one day which popped off one of the coveted transom caps. Had to buy a new one from MichaelP.

Fortunately the reason a number of these issues haven't been taken care of is because the boat runs, cruises, and fishes great as-is so I haven't been real motivated to tear it apart again. Maybe this winter!

you admitting & documenting these missteps have helped countless mob members and will continue to do so! :thumb:

I was hooking-up the battery on my motor stand last night...

1. Quadruple checking the polarity on the terminals (for the rectifier's sake)...
2. Dropped the wingnut for the positive lead...
3. Extended/reached to grab the wingnut with my right hand and leads in my left hand...
4. I felt the positive lead graze the negative terminal...

I am not too far into mine.....the first thing was thinking FREE, was good deal......NOT

I am sure i am not the only person to flip his boat several times not waiting to do all the work needed on that side, only to realize it has to be flipped again.....what comes first ...the inside or the outside.... sometimes you are not ready to get to a step, so you do other stuff, while you can do something at least.

for sure rushing with my new welder and fighting an unwinnable battle try to mig outside in the wind....and over heating my transom sheet metal into a set of curtains!! now, i realize i could have done it faster and with no warpage.....oh well, I had to learn on something!!

not exactly on The Tin, but thunk y'all might enjoy the tale...

so last night i'm getting my gear packed and ready to depart on a 700+ mile week long fishing trip, hopefully leaving tonight. working on drilling for J-bolts to hold the stadium seat in place on the portabote "seats". that evil troll Murphy apparently popped up and before you know it, he'd broken the center seat right in the middle. now this just happened to be the one i was sitting on without having it properly pinned into place and it broke right under my butt, but i'm sure it was Murphy, not me....

this is a big bummer as this seat is one of the most important structural components on the PB, and taking it to sea without this in good order would be dangerous. just when i was moping about my ruined trip, i heard triumphant music from nowhere and this sooperhero lookin guy in spandex shows up, with a soup can in one hand and a skilsaw in the other. he announces that he's TinBoat Man and proceeds to throw the soup can at Murphy. i realize it's filled with epoxy and xylene when i hear Murphy scream and melt like the wicked witch o the west. TBM grabs a 4x8 sheet of 3/8 exterior plywood with his free hand and cuts it with the skilsaw, not just freehand but holding it up in the air!from somewhere, he produces another soup can and proceeds to slather the plywood in epoxy as i realize he's cut it to fit right over the existing foam on top of old seat. my jaw is still hangin as he announces, "All in day's work for TINBOATMAN!", strides imperiously out to an 18' I/o Holiday, and roars off down the .....street? but there seems to be no damage and it soon lifts off and he disappears from sight, shouting over the roar of the Mighty MurkCruiser that he bought it from some guy on W coast of FL.

I'd def love to do another one. I made a TON of mistakes on my resto....and caused a lot of extra work for myself.

I think I spent more time climbing in and out of the boat looking for tools...than I did actually working on it.

If you're like me, the gunnel is too easy to lay things. Of course, too easy to knock off too. Over the side, followed by me to drag 'em back up. :facepalm:

1. used a plastic transfer paper to tape off my paint job, ended up melting onto my boat when the paint hit it.
2. When redoing the under bow bracing I didn't use the old pieces, just measured for new ones, got my bow back on only to realize it had been pushed out and wouldn't fit anymore.
3. Got my motor bolted on then realized I forgot the 5200
4. Went to tighten the battery terminals with a wrench, connected + and - ended up nearly turning my wrench into molten lava, and scaring the crap out of me.
