Lets put the boat on the dock

Last night my daughter and I went to the marina to check the boat as we do every day . We usually hang around , drool over the other boats especially the Sea ray Pachanga down the way . We were watching a boat come in very fast , a lot faster than i would or any of the power boaters there. When he got to the slip he came in so fast he nailed the dock with the bow of the old boat .I thought he would climb the dock with the speed he was going . The only thing that disturbs me is that he is in the neighboring slip to my precious boat but thank goodness there is a small dock between us .

Ain't it strange how some boaters think a boat will stop like a car and that 'no wake' zones don't apply to them.

You could have a word to the guy about his driving abilities, he might be receptive to your suggestions or he might not, you may end up with the neigbor from hell

A quiet word to the marina owner is probably the best course of action. Good luck.

Aldo

Ticks me off when I see stuff like that. Hey, if you don't care about your own stuff, that's fine. But have a little respect for others' stuff. I take great pride in my boat, and I know most others do too. I agree with Dunaruna that a quiet word with the owner of the place would probably be the best. He should know that this guy not only goes too fast, but doesn't care about the marina's dock.

That reminds me of something else. It amazes me what some people's deinition of "no wake" is. Do they think it doesn't apply to them or do they not know what it means? I often see people in the no wake zones making a large wake. It is a no wake zone for a reason. I think some people are just in too much of a hurry.

Up here in Maine, commercial fishermen pretty much ignore no-wake postings, and the harbormasters look the other way. I appreciate that they might be in more of a hurry than I am since they are making a living and I'm goofing off, but the wake of a lobsterboat is huge - I've seen Kayakers and people in tenders hold on for dear life....

The guys down at the marina have told me about who to watch out for . They said usually this guy is more careful , maybe he had to go to the bathroom and thus was in a hurry . One fellow told me his dockmate used his boat as a bumper each time the guy came in . He set the guy straight and there was no more of that . They also told me to watch out for another boat as the guys on it were usually drunk and once they did bring a 24 foot bayliner up on the dock .They are not too close to me thank goodness. I probably will not talk to the guy about his driving but I will be watching and WOE to the man who damages my precious boat .

Well, a note about wakes and no wake zones. Technically it is impossible to move an object trough water without creating a wake. The posted speed limit is a far more useful thing. This is probably why nobody gives commercial fishing boats a hard time. If they are doing something reasonably like the speed limit there is nothing they can do about their wake. A heavy displacement boat makes a heavy wake and commecial fishing vessels are generally very heavy displacement. Also, the prismatic coefficient is very relevent. A fat transom (high prismatic coefficient) makes a big wake at displacement speeds (slow.) Some boats (many planing hulls) actually make a bigger wake at the no wake speed than they would on plane. Go figure. Hopefully your neighbor is just learning and will correct his ways on his own. Still, it may not be a bad idea to invest in a few extra fenders.

I found out I am not the only one with concerns about the mans driving . One fellow told me the idiot just backs out of his slip whenever he feels like it and whoever is coming in has to hit the reverse and try to get out of the way in a small area. The man is actually a sailboater , just uses the powerboat to place racing bouys for the sailboat races. This however is no excuse as he always uses the powerboat and as a boater he should know the rules and he should show consideration for other boaters.

You're right ethel, the fact that the man is a sailor is not only not an excuse, it makes his behaviour even worse. As a sailor he should be expected to have even more advanced boat handling skills. The only solution to this problem I can think of would be a Sawsall waterproof to at least a few metres, but then you might get on the bad side of the harbormaster...

As Seamus says, the concept of "no wake" is elusive. I live in Iowa, where most of the state lakes allow any size motor at "no wake" speed. Everybody seems to have settled on about 6 to 6.5mph. We would all produce a lot less "wake" running wide open on plane, but the principle is to run slow and not disturb the locals. Since this concept is an improvement from the old 10hp max rule, we all play the game.
