Wow, you are good and quick to boot. Question is, would this be a good purchase? Secondly, I have a 1993 Nissan 9.9 that weighs about 85 lbs. It is a long shaft and I would like to put a transom elevator on to put i to the correct heigth. Would this boat be good candidate for this? Also would this motor be enough for the 16 footer? It will be used as a fishing boat only, so I'm not wanting to break any speed records, just be able to check my jugs and trautlines. I will also run the river in the spring, but it is a small river.

Sounded like you were having a guessing lottery...I'm guessing.

There are a lot of those 16' boats out there. Hard to say from that pic which that is unless someone has a more intimate connection to those lines.

I would also guess that a 9.9 would be a bit light on power for that boat. Typically a 16' can take 30-40hp motor.

9.9 is fine for fishing however, trailer? You are not going to toss a 16' boat into a pickup.

From the "quality" of the picture and the detailed description.... that really could be a bit smaller then 16'. Have you seen it in person with a tape measure or pace it off?

I have not seen it yet, but I am trying to decide if it is worth going to look at. I have a good tailer. I just found out today that my boat is FUBAR, so I need something for spring break. The guy told me that I would need to replace the transom, but I'm not worried about that. I've been reading up and it shouldn't take me but a few days or so.

My father in laws brother has a 14' jon sitting in his barn. He never uses it and I'm supposed to go look at it. I have no idea what I will find. I'm not a big fan of the square nose kind. I like to be able to cut into waves. It may be the pointed nose type. Only time will tell.

I really like the first boat because the shape is perfect for the fishing that we do. I don't mind going somewhat slow and the fuel mileage is good. A 9.9 wont win a race on any boat.

BTW: Guessing game is on. We will know for sure what brand of boat, hopefully tommorrow.

I fished out of one of those for years here in Oklahoma doing exactly what you are talking about. Texoma, Eufaula, and Thunderbird, plus the river at Webbers Falls, and 9.9 works fine and doesn't need to be registered or taged. For that reason the boat either needs to be inside or the motor removed when you return home. thieves love them. The boat is another issue. If he has the title, fine. If he doesn't, he needs to file for a lost title. The issue of the bow and waves also isn't that big a deal since the boat tends to ride nose high. The jon boat has an advantage for what you are doing, since it is easier to lay over the bow and run a trotline. With this type of boat you tend to run a trotline from the side. You don't end up with more than a few inches of freeboard with 2 people on one side.

I was always told that the waves would be a big issue with the john. That is the only reason I have been tending away from them. We will see how it looks when we go to look. I live in Northwest Oklahoma, and the wind up here makes the lakes treacherous pretty often. That is why the john makes me nervous because of the white caps. What do you mean by few inches of freeboard? Do you mean, the water is a few inches from coming over the side? We will see what that John looks like when we go check it out. Some Johns I have seen are very appealing and some of them look small and rickety.

I'm very protective of my motor, and thanks for the advice. I got it barely used, and the compression is awesome.

Waves are a big issue with any small boat. Either of those boats are going to bounce pretty hard with large waves. We always made sure we got the weigh distributed right and tired to hit the waves head on. Hanging over the side of a small boat tends to make one side lower in the water. Sometimes real low. I loved running a trotline out of a jon boat. Laying over the front allowed the boat to line up with the wind and you could just pull it along. Doing it from the side and the wind gets a bigger area to push against making it a little more interesting. We always used snaps on the trotline so I could just unhook the whole thing and throw the fish in the boat. My partner would have a hook baited and I would just put it on. For empty hooks I just reached behind my back and he laid the bait in my hand. This way the boat stayed pretty level. As I got older my need to have more room for stuff required my boats got larger. I don't trotline anymore, but I do jug a lot. Love those ones that flip. We have figured a way to mount some of those little lights that glow when you break them on the bottom. When they flip at night you can see where they are. A good size cat can drag those things a mile or more.

if that boat is 16 foot long , then it is a VERY deep boat!!!!

the proportions dont LOOK like it would be 16 foot!!!

a 9.9 will be slow....you wont be happy if you ahve to go 2 miles or more each way.....youd wish you could get there faster...

if you go alone, look into a 14 foot, like a Duranautic offshore model...deep and wide... and you could go a little faster with your 9.9.

you should be able to find a trailered 14 footer for about that price...

good luck

Re: Let's see who can recognize this boat profile.

Thanks for all the opinions everyone. My little 14' semi-v seem to cut into the waves rather well, but sideways was scary. I may just borrow my uncles Jon boat to see if I like it or not. I just hope it's not one of the narrow, flimsy looking ones, or I will just have to steal my father in laws ranger.
