LH or RH

I was winterizing my boat and took the flame arrestor off to clean it. I've always assumed that my prop was right handed - no valid reason for that assumption, I just made it. On the flame arrestor cover, it includes key details about my engine and drive and one of the details is that it's a left hand drive. So, obviously I was wrong (certainly not the first time!) At that point I became curious about how you tell if it's LH or RH so I started studying the prop. It would appear that for the boat to move forward the prop would have to spin clockwise if you are standing behind the boat and facing forward. Seems like that would RH, but I'm probably wrong again. I've attached photos of the flame arrestor and stern drive. Can someone help me confirm that it is or isn't LH drive and talk me through how you determine LH or RH if it isn't labled for dummies like me?

Re: LH or RH

That's the ENGINE rotation; not the prop rotation.

The prop rotation is RH.

You had it right. standing behind, the prop is RH (clockwise) rotation.

The crank pulley turns left.. flywheel/flexplate,right..

Easiest way to determine prop, by looking at it, is imagine holding it in your hand with exhaust side of casing toward you.. if youre holding it in your left hand with the ball of your thumb resting on the blade, its left handed ... If you gotta hold it on your right to rest the ball of your thumb against the blade, its right handed rotation.

There are rare birds out there, but the majorityoof single engine boats are right hand propped.

Thanks guys - very helpful. Is there any practical reason why I care that the engine is LH rotation?

Nope,... It's Standard rotation,.... Right-handed would be backwards,...
