I am new to fishing and my 8 year old son is killing me! All he wants to do is fish but I don't know what I am doing so all he does is complain that he isn't catching any fish.

Our boat is on the peconic and we would like to catch some stripped bass. I heard just the other day a dude in a kayak caught 2 36" stripers.

What should I use to start catching some fish and what should I look for to find them?

Thanks.

Just be glad your son has an interest in fishing and don't let him get too discouraged.

Why don't you hire a Captain from your area that specializes in Striper and pay real close attention to how when why and where. He will probably be more that happy to give you a few pointers and then you and your son can go out and work as a team. One of the best times of my life was introducing my son to snook fishing in Florida. Too bad it ruined his largemouth bass enthusiasm.

Best of luck to you and your son

PS: I'm talking about a half or full day charter on his boat with his tackle. Also I assume you have checked the local tackle shops and asked advice on what rig's to use bait and most importantly areas to fish in.

It's a shame, but many of the local's are out of business due to the pressure of people buying most of their tackle at wally world etc. Now you might get lucky and find a fisherman in sporting goods, but I wouldn't make a large bet on it happening, in fact you might be luckier just to find someone working in sporting goods at all.

Stripers run mainly off shore, not in the bay. The fall run is from Massachusetts to the Hudson. Surf casting off the south shore or going out of Moriches Inlet is your best bet.

I'm not a big fisherman but the Long Island Fisherman provides lots of information and there are still bait shops that will help you out.
