Having a struggle with life caulk. My paint and primer is not drying on the caulk..Using boat lifes, life caulk,white....
Caulking up some seams on my old aluminum starcraft chieftain, not big seams just average amounts of caulk to small amounts, like 1/4 to 3/8 wide and 1/16 to 1/8 thick..
First off i cleaned everything up good let it dry and put on the caulk..waited about 2 days and put on a thin coat of interlux precoat primer(2 days was to soon probably) which i have used in other places and it worked great..waited 6 days and the primer was still wet on the caulk seams,so i wiped it off with paint thinner and waited 5 days for more air curing and decided to just try painting over it with interlux brightside 1 part poly enamel..that was yesterday morning, the rest of the paint it dry to touch but on the caulk its still wet..Wierd thing is the caulk feels totally cured i even pulled a little piece out to feel it.What is the problem...Also there is some boatlife caulk i put in another spot the same day in the beginning but didnt paint and its already dry and ive sanded it..Whats happening and what do i have to do to fix the problem..

Re: Life caulk problems

I don't know what your problem is but lifecaulk cures with moisture. The drier it is the longer it takes. I would guess your paint sealed off the caulk and is making it take longer to dry. In past years I spritzed the lifecaulk bead with water to get a skin on it fast. This made it ready to paint sooner. There a no detrimental affects from doing this.

Re: Life caulk problems

If the Life Caulk is silicone or has silicone in it,the paint will not adhere to it.

Its says it paintable and sandable and ive painted over it before with no problems..Im really wondering if when i primed it the first time after only 2 days,it was not cured and absorbed or had a reaction with the primer and now is messed up..Guess i might be cutting out about 15' of caulk seams..bummer..
