Lifestyle Choice My ***!!!

I just received in the mail from my company a four-color brochure describing our benefits "Enhancements" for 2007.

After the usual verbiage about "escalating costs", "challenging competitive environment", buzz word buzz word yada yada yada, it goes on to tell me that the prescription drug program will no long cover medications related to "lifestyle choices", such as, those used to treat E.D.

So now having a normal sex life is a lifestyle choice?

Are you sure a "normal" sexlife would require drugs? Semantics yes, but there were no costs prior to the development of ED drugs, right? Don't they have to draw the line somewhere? Funky line for sure . . .

However, I dont see the economics in this as a happy employee is a productive employee.

When you get mad at work, tell them its cause you cant afford Viagra and maybe they will all pitch in a buy you some.

Last time I looked, Viagra was in the top 5 of the medications paid for by my plan. At the same time, some medications to ease the horrific pain of my wife's rheumatoid arthritis is denied as a covered med. Your whining is falling on deaf ears(eyes) here.

Do you really see a prescription drug benefit plan as co-workers supplementing each other? It's not totally off base; we're a self-insured company so the expense reduces the amount available for things like salaries and executive bonus plans.

On the other hand, medical insurance is an integral part of a total compensation package; any reduction in coverage is a reduction in pay. For those affected of course. If I were talkin bout myself, which I'm not sayin I am...more like, just in general...er....um...

Anyways, before the development of the drugs, a "normal sexlife" was different for the, say, over-45 crowd than for the say, 30-somethings. But now, it's the same. In my opinion.

But if "a normal sex life is one which does not require drugs", does it not follow that a normal life in general is one that doesn't require drugs? Isn't the decision to take drugs to treat, say, hyperthyroidism not also a lifestyle choice? How far is it from there to treating blood pressure, cholesterol, pain, heart disease, infection, diabetes, cancer? Maybe a "normal life" is one that ends at age 55?

It's a slippery slope! A slippery slope I tell ya!

We've got to nip it! Nip it in the bud, I say!

That's a fair description! After my cancer surgery I would have had to join the monestary without Cialis. Talk about changing "Lifestyles"! Then again, I might look at "Lifestyle choices" as referring to a sex change operation.

So go tell all your coworkers they have to pay more for their drug insurance so you can get Viagra. See what the average guy says.

Pain effects your ability to function in a normal life.

Viagra effects your ability to function in a sex life.

Sex life is about 0.1% of your time on this earth. Maybe less for some.

You do the math as to which is more important.

You could probably more cheaply buy a sweet young hooker and skip the viagra. The ensuing divorce may change the economics of that scheme.

Tough crowd. Got to watch for that slippery slope. The difference between Recession and Depression was explained to me this way "Recession is when your neighbor is out of work, Depression is when I'm out of work". This subject sounds like a corollary.

jtexas, does the plan cover contraceptive drugs??? Or Pregnancy??? Seems to me those are life style choices also.

Using KIZ's logic I sure don't want to pay for my co workers birth control meds, or the kids they decide to have.

Medical care during pregnancy - yes, fertility treatments - no, contraception - yes but that might be different now, I didn't notice, hasn't been an issue for us for years.

Maybe 0.1% of total time cradle to grave...but how much of your prime time?

Maybe 0.1% of time actively spent, but when you add in the 35% of time spent in pursuit, and the additional 45% of time spent thinking about it...well, it adds up.

Birth control pills save the company money. Ask any parent how expensive kids are and how they get sick from all the colds the kids bring home from school.

Same reasoning for anti fat drugs or anti smoke drugs.

Productivity (or lack there of) is all they really care about.
