Well it’s finally running. For those of you who have been following this poor fool from the beginning, to the explosion week before last, the last chapter was written today. For the last two weeks I have gone over and over the directions I have received here. Same problem every time. Back fire in both intake and exhaust. I was sure I did everything correctly yet the backfires prevailed. This morning again I re-adjusted the valves, made sure I was on DTC on no. 1, and so forth, still the backfires. What could it be? Finally about noon there was a mechanic working on a diesel boat in the marine. Asked him what he would charge just to check that everything was proper. $20 later I was told everything was in order and without tearing into the thing he had no suggestions. But if everything was proper why the backfires? A valve had to be open or stuck at the time of detonation. I know, I know. Setting there in a stew I happened to glance at the other engine. Lo and behold it had the same firing order stamped on the intake as the other engine. Can’t be, counter-rotating engines. I didn’t know the other firing order. Checking further I found Mercruiser numbers their distributor caps. Sure enough two sets of numbers on each post. Simply pulled all the wires off and plugged them on the second set of numbers. Took all of 5 minuets. Turned on the ignition and whalla, engine fired up on the first rotation. I knew the engines were counter rotating, but the firing order was right there on the intake. Seems like either mercruiser uses the same manifold for both engines or somewhere along the way the manifold was replaced and nobody bothered about the number. Again I would like to thank all that have helped me in this endeavor. It’s been an experience.

Yea rattana, it sure was a good feeling. :D I knew it would start after I found out I had the wrong engine firing order. But deep down inside there was this little feeling, in case it don’t, now what. Then too it hasn’t come apart yet. To me that was a major undertaking. To some on this board it would be a minor adjustment. :D

hello
are you sure the engines counter rotate? merc did away with that years ago. now all rotation changes are done at the drive/transmissions. but the caps are still labled for both ways. howerver if you had completely wired for right hand rotation it wont run. it will however give you some spactacular carb fires :) :) . but if you missed a few then it will run just run like a wounded monkey. the funniest I have seen so far was the guys who did a rebuild called me about 100 times finally I went by and the problem was the emergency stop clip was in the off position:) cost them 45 dollars for me to say hey what about this :) :) .
good luck and keep posting and let us know how it all works now :)

Yea rodbolt, they defiantly counter rotate. Maybe cause I’m running V drives that they have to. The engine I was working on (boy that sounds good) the port engine, turns counter clockwise looking at the front of the engine while the starboard turns counter clockwise. Never quite had the carb on fire, thought I was going to blow it off the manifold a couple of times, and let’s not forget the explosion. :D

"The engine I was working on " :)
now repeat over and over, gotta sound good. :D

Reminds me of a old 54' or 57' (I think) International Harvester truck a friend and his dad were trying to get running. Truck had a 6volt system and they were using a 12v battery with jumper cables to make her spin over better (didn't want to ask why) and of course by the time I showed up they had attracted a crowd. The engine was belching fire through the carb followed by a backfire through the muffler (dont know why it didn't blow apart) Interesting watching them turn the distributor back and forth while cranking the engine, then "belch", "boom" and everybody jumps back 5'. The best part was they kept doing this and that then.... "belch""boom" and everybody jumps back again. This went on for at least half an hour. As comical as it was I could not resist adding my assistance. After dam near banging my head on the hood jumping back from the fire ball. I pulled dist cap noticed rotor turned counter-clockwise. Checked the plug wires and they had it for clockwise rotation. After that she purred like a kitten.

Sometimes the simple things are the hardest to find.

Now get out and have some fun. I'll be waiting to hear how the maiden voyage went.
