I'm going to be pulling the engine off the boat in the coming week so that I can replace my transom. I see most people are using some sort of lifting eye on the top of the engine to pull them. I do not have the eye.

Are there any places where it is NOT okay to lift these engines from? It looks like there are plenty of places to put a rope/chain/strap on this engine. Anyplace I should avoid?

Anyplace that was not designed for that purpose. There is always more than one way to get the job done, but only one right way. Those lifting eyes are readily available for a reasonable cost.

Oh, I didn't realize it was that important. Are they still available from mercury? I don't see a part number in my manual... Anyone have a par number?

I don't think that flywheel has the lifting eye provision, it is ok to use the handle on the lower cowl if you run a strap across the bottom and all the way around. Do not use the top handle 'cause it can pull off, as I found out. 2 guys should be able to lift that motor by the lower cowl handle.
