I need to lift my 1978 175 HP 'rude. Try as I might, I can not find any lifting eye on the motor. I want to screw a lifting eye onto the flywheel bolt and pull stright up. The only lifting eyes I can find a flywheel puller that screws into the three holes on the flywheel. Instead of the puller bolt, a ring is screwed into the center.
Will this work?
Is this the only option available?
Where can I find the proper ring?

Thanks,

I had to lift my 1990 Evinrude by the fly wheel bolt holes. It also had no lifting eye or place to attach one. I made a lifting eye out of a plate of steel with the three bolt pattern drilled in it and attached a larger steel eye bolt for lifting. I basically copied the OEM lifting tool. Since the later motors can be lifted this way, I don't see why the older motors can't be lifted the same way too.

Re: Lifting Eye

go to harbour freight and buy one of those cheap puller kits $14, like for steering wheels. I then used that bracket to attach to the 3 flywheel holes. go to home depot and buy a $2 bolt with the eye on the end and mount it in the center of the bracket before you bolt the bracket to the flywheel. works perfect. total investment $20 and you have a good puller kit for future use.

Re: Lifting Eye

I use a $5 shackle that fits around the end of the crankshaft, and the flywheel nut tightened down a little holds it on. I do it this way with no flywheel installed. The small lifting ring I have on my hoist fits in the shackle perfectly.

Re: Lifting Eye

Usually the 3-legged automotive hormonic balancer puller works fine, as clifton stated. Then run a strap through the bolts of the puller.

Do what you want, but remember that thing is heavy. You run great risk of dropping it if one of those makeshift methods break.

The proper way to lift is is with the flywheel puller combined with a eye-bolt in the center that screws down into the countersink on the end of the crankshaft to center and equalize the pull. A harmonic balancer will work too, if it is QUALITY. Some of those cheap ones break even while trying to remove the flywheel. You must use Grade-8 bolts!!!!.

There is another type of acceptable puller, one that screws onto the crankshaft threads after removing the flywheel nut. Be sure to re-torque the nut to specs when you put it back.

Another way to lift it is with nylon strap or rope slings.

Re: Lifting Eye

I used ratcheting tie downs around the base and transom bracket in a cris cross pattern with both crossing the center of the flywheel and used an engine hoist to lift them. Made sure they were well beyond the lifting or break strength of the weight of the motor. I have used this method on several different motors and have not had a problem, just make sure you tighten them pretty good before lifting to make sure that they dont crack any plastics or rub the wrong way and make any cosmetic damage.

Re: Lifting Eye

rpastor, are you lifting to remove, or to change the engine height? If lifting to adjust height and you have a boat trailer, there's a much easier way.

Re: Lifting Eye

FR has the best ideas as I've done it that way for years and never had a problem. Good lifting equipment is cheap when you think about what it would cost you if you dropped what ever your lifting.

Re: Lifting Eye

I would never lift an entire engine with a shackle, but for power heads its just fine.
