My son has taken an interest in restoring my grandfather's Evinrude Light Twin 3. The motor has not been run for several years. The last time it was in the water it started great, ran great for about ten minutes then it acted like it lost about half of its power. I did have the vent open on top of the tank. Running on one perhaps? I do not know where to begin on this restoration project. I guess it to be of late 50's or early 60's vintage. I have a serial # of 3014-03852. I would appreciate any help with things that you have found out any links that would be helpful for this father/son restoration of grampa's Evinrude.Thank you!

Re: light twin 3 Evinrude

They made that motor for around 25yrs with minor changes and the parts usually interchange. Clean the carbs and make sure the tank is clean. Early cork floats were later replaced with plastic so look to see if the float is eaten up. If it doesn't run right after that, check the coils and ignition. Coils go bad and start showing hard starting when hot or the outer covering cracked. Points can be dressed but condensors should always be replaced...they are real cheap. Change gearcase fluids and water pump impeller. Be aware and check for leaking prop shaft and drive shaft (under the water pump)seals after running a bit. All parts are still easy to find and the motor easy to work on.

Re: light twin 3 Evinrude

Great engine! Just adding a little more info:
Evinrude Model 3014 is a 1955 engine. The first in the line came out in '51. Fuel/Oil mix is 24:1 87 octane gas to TC-W3 rated outboard oil. Forget about any talk of SAE 30W printed on the engine. Spark plugs are Champion J6C gapped at .030" (J6J has been replaced by it). Lower unit oil is BRP 'HiVis' or equivelant 90/80W outboard gearcase oil.

Great 3hp tuneup guide, click here.

Head on up to the Johnson/Evinrude repair forum and we'll help you diagnose that problem. A cracked coil would be my first bet, as BillP has mentioned. Sometimes they seem to produce good sparks, but they arc over through the cracks as you throttle up. Often that can be tested for by trying to draw a 1/4" or longer arc.

Good luck!
