lighting question

i realized last night that i don't believe my boat has legal lighting. my masthead light when set to mooring (or whatever it is labeled) lights up 360* but when it is set to running lights that same masthead light only lights up in the front. so there is no white light visible from the rear. its a 1986 sea ray sundancer 250. i don't recall seeing anywhere on the back of the boat for a sternlight. i'm sure it would be pretty easy to rewire the masthead so it lights up 360* whether the switch is on mooring or running.

thoughts? anyone else have a similar sea ray that has the same issue?

The reason for the light toward the front when running is so the operator isn't blinded and night vision isn't impaired. There should be a working stern light when running. An anchored boat should display an all-round or 360 degree light as you have when switched to anchor.. You need to find or fix the stern light. From photos I've seen, it is between the swim platform and ski hook on a Sundancer.

Does it have a burned out bulb in a transom mounted stern light:

I can comment that my '89 Bayliner has a separate switch for that light.I don' t really think it makes any difference. I do know that light better work if stopped on the water. MO.

Stopped doesn't make a difference for that one! Needs to be on at all times after dark.

I think he meant stopped by the authorities....

IF you don't have a stern light it's really simple to add one.

i will have to look at pics or wait till i get back down to the boat. maybe there is a stern light that i missed. if so then it is built into the transom? as there are no lights sticking up anywhere back there
