Re: lights on boat

I've yet to see any state that didn't require a red/green light and a white transom light required while underway or in adverse weather. A single, 360 degree white light is required while stationary or anchored. The position of the lights depends on the type of vessel. The light must also be able to be seen for a specified distance.

The lantern might be legal once you get to your spot but you'd need the bow light to get there.

State vs federal laws will depend on where you plan to boat. Lighting requirements can depend on the type and length of vessel (e.g. sail vs powered). I'd start with your state's requirements first. Here's an example from Massachusetts: http://www.boat-ed.com/ma/course/p4-9_navlights.htm

Re: lights on boat

I have used a propane lantern on my 27ft cruiser to sturgeon fish all the time in calif. we have been boarded several times by game warden and homeland security, the never said anything to us about useing it. If you are going to use one. I would stick to propane, and keep away from thw white gas. also it's only good at anchor, you need your red and green if motoring. I use a piece of tin foil over half of the lantern to keep the light out of our eyes when fishing
