on my '56 Einrude Lightwin, I rebuilt the carb this winter and it ran fin in the tank and started on the second pull. Got it out today on the lake for the first time and could not get it to fire up. After lettting it sit for a bit I got fired up but at full throttle it was at idle speed and it died in a few minute then I'd choke it , it'd start and when I closed the choke and opened it up it would die, like it was starveing for gas. Drop the carb at home and needle and float is working fine, so now what ? I didn't see any clogs in the brass pick up tube. Any Ideas what the problem couls be ? _thanks

Are you getting enough flow from the fuel tank? There is a sintered filter element in the tank that is notorious for getting plugged up. They are next to impossible to clean and are meant to be replaced. Another thing they do is get plugged only part way up the height. Then it runs till the gas level gets down to the plugged portion.

HOWEVER, if you have gas in the carburetor and it won't start, it is not a fuel problem at all. We have all been fooled by that "gotcha". Check out the igniton system. Cracked coils are the rule on those old motors and you are wasting your time till you replace them.

Re: Lightwin carb trouble

It's got new coils and ran fine last year. I rebuilt the carb this winter and found the problem. I took apart the carb and flushed it out with carb cleaner and compressed air put it back on and it ran fine. Must have got something clog.
