Limp Mode?

I own a 1986 Johnson 90 hp outboard. Sat in the back yard under a tarp for five years. The stock fuel pump is gone and universal electric fuel pump in it?s place. All fuel lines from tank to carb have been replaced. Carbs rebuilt. Runs great 90% of the time. Propped right good power and good speed. Will pop a skier up quickly and has a top speed 43 mph (without skier) on my little Sidewinder speed boat.

Problem is sometimes the engine will suddenly not have any power and will barely get over 2000 RPM?s. Many times this will happen at slow speeds and you can accelerate your way out of it. Happens when the engine is hot or cold. Only occasionally occurs at high speeds. My brother said the fuel filter was mounted upside down so I flipped that over and it was running great. Yesterday we went out and it functioned great all day then at the end of the day started this ?low power? (LP) problem while in a no wake zone. Got out of the no wake zone and tried to accelerated and could not get it out of this ?LP? mode. Gas tank well vented, switch gas tanks, pumped the gas line bulb all without effect. After about 5 minutes and ? mile it finally ran normally again.

That being said, it does not appear to be a fuel delivery problem. Of course, a carb could have some debris causing a problem.

It could also be a coil but it seems to run so smooth in this LP mode that it really doesn?t sound like a dead cylinder.
Does this engine have a ?limp mode? that it would go into when it senses a problem?

Any ideas?

We are at a resort at Wisconsin Dells with only Wi-Fi in one area so I will check back when I can.

Re: Limp Mode?

do a search on "SLOW modes" in this forum and it may answer you query. There is a function in which the motor will not over rev due to say an overheat problem but it will in this function try to assist you to get back home.
