lining up gears on bf100

Hey, just wondering which is the easiest way to line up pinion gear with the back gear in the lower unit gearcase. Whats the proceedure for reinstalling those gears? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Okay after perservering with it I got all the gears installed and had the shift lever pulled up meaning it was in forward gear whilst installing the gears, the problem is when i had everything fitted I could not move the shift rod up or down. When i rotate the propshaft by hand it turns a little both ways and stops.??
There are two shims In my container (roughly 40mm rings) that I thought I might have missed when assembling..but then Im not sure if theyre supposed to be in there.
Any help would be great
