When doing a link and sync "maximum spark advance adjustment" my manual (Clymer) tells me to start the engine and put it in forward gear to between 5000 and 5400 RPM's. Can this be done in a trash can with a hose running to it because I can't imagine the amount of water that is going to fly around or is do I have to install a "test" wheel with ear muffs. The only other way is to do it on the water and I can't imagine a shop having to hook up all the timing light gear just to set this up. This is a great site and I have already learned tons. Thanks goes out to everyone.

Re: Link and sync

Howdy, Wipper. Unless you have changed the settings or replaced throttle linkage, etc., you shouldn't need to do a link'n'synch.

The procedure Clymer describes is to be done in a test tank, with a test wheel, and is only done when: 1. The engine has been overhauled, resulting in new parts and consequent mismatches. 2. Key parts have been replaced. 3. Somebody messed with the adjustments.

Good luck.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: Link and sync

Thanks J.B.
My motor ran well all season except for the occasional alarm horn. I took it to my dealer and he could not give me an answer. Now from reading all of these great forums I have it figured out what the problem is and have taken steps to fix it for the next season. I was just trying to educate myself on some of the "not so obvious to me" unanswered questions not covered in the manual. Thanks again.
