Been a little worried about my link and synch on the motor .. she not starting up in the water like I’d like to see, even when she's hot. I do get a sneeze and mis at cold start up. Thing is When im drifting into shallow water or large rocks I'd like to know she'd gonna fire right up. I kinda have to try all different things, throttle, no throttle, Choke.. I am weaning her off the 25-1 mix, plugs have been pretty oily, but I have been cleaning them.. Im thinking my set-up is out and I'm reading over the manual ..once again in confusion.... Will be trying to get it set per manual, then I hope to time her correctly. I have read about the 4 deg off Setting at cranking speed .. does this work.. Motor runs great once started, but sounds like it wants to die...low idle in the water. And coughs and spits on cold start up.

Also I do feel water going into the heads right at start up..thru the hoses.. are my Stats stuck open?

And at start up im only getting water out of the starboard side exhaust relief hole.

Any pointers would be a help.

1991 just rebuilt Ev 115

Re: Link and Synch

Sounds like lean sneeze, rich up the idle jet/s on the carb/s a little bit 1/8 turn at a time then wait a minute for it to make the change. It could be that the carb/s need pulled, cleaned, and rebuilt, not that many $$$. If it was just rebuilt then a tune up should get it, just my thoughts here.

Richard

when you start the moter after 3 minutes feel the cylinderheads.
if they feel cool your stats are stuck wide open.
if it feels hot after a few sec the tstats are fine.
i would let somebody with experience set the timing.
you realy dont want to mess up all your good work.
i'm sure the tstats are fine because it will defenetly run like crab if moter stays cold.
make shore your float is not set to high.

good luck reeldutch.

No my motor on the muffs gets warm/hot to the touch.
Guess im just going to let the timing go for now. I see that i really didn't touch /move any adjustments after the rebuild. will tweek the idle up a tad so it idles to spec in the water.

I have 10 hours on her so if i really had an advance timing issue she'd be dead by now..

I have had her on the water every weekend. :D

Sure sounds like a cold engine to me. Could also be as simple as too large of spark plug gap.

They were all around 37. knocked them back to .30. Tho, I won't be putting her in the water till next weekend. that may help alittle.

Re: Link and Synch

Hotrod, I would seriously think about letting a marine mechanic tune her up for you. I put 40 hrs and $1000 into my rebuild. Did everything by the book but couldn't get her running right. She started right up but I couldn't get her to idle and run right. Took it to an OMC mechanic and for less than $80 he put the tune on her. Not only does she run like a new outboard but I feel much more confident that I am not going to damage all my good work.

Re: Link and Synch

When they replaced my stator they said everything looked fine and she ran well. I asked about the timing and he told me as long as i didn't move the timing arm all would be ok. All im really looking for is confidenct in starting her. she does start everytime but hard when she's cold and not right off the bat when she's hot. Maybe it's my starting procedure. when I give he some throttle she'll fires up pretty good on the water. Just gunna go over the link and sink and maybe time her on the water once i make sure that is fine..plus the 25/1 doesn't help starting I would think.

In 1988 I bought a new 80 merc. I owned her for 16years. not one problem. and when I went to start her she fired just with a key turn and a little choke. I sold it for $ to redo this boat. maybee it's just the nature of the beast but my rude doesn't start as easy.
