Link & Sync question

1989 J50 J50TLCEC

I am in the middle of replacing my spark lever & starting the link & sync process. After reading the shop manual, I am starting to figure out how these motors work. The link & sync process says to keep the carb butterflies closed throughout the L&S process. Am I correct to assume that the motor idles with the butterflies closed and only the timing is adjusted to achieve the proper RPM? Anything above idle and the butterflies open and timing advances. This is an observation and just wanted some clarification/confirmation.

Thanks Again.

Re: Link & Sync question

That is what I found when doing a link & sync on my 40hp. I had a problem where the motor stalled when put in gear. While doing the link & synch as per the Evinrude/Johnson manual, I realized the timing advance was off and that is what cured the stalling problem.

BTW I found that one of those precision steel rulers marked in 64th of an inch came in real handy for measuring the linkages lengths exactly.

Re: Link & Sync question

Thanks Mark! I was surprised at how easy it was to do the L&S. I guess I lucked out because everything worked out how it was supposed to once I got the linkages set correctly.
