I am restoring a 1973 larson trihull and an 1985 Evinrude 115 hp. :) :mad:I took it out on the water today for the first time and it went well. Had a dead battery , so I used my Jeep battery to jump and run the boat. The boat idled well and ran up to about 1/2 maybe 3/4 revs . So im wondering what is holding back the motor. Could it be the fuel tank, fuel bulb, carbs clogged after thorough cleaning . What I am also thinking it cause i didnt have the battery connected. Could there an electrical problem. Any of you guys have any ideals. Any suggestions welcome. Happy boating. ;)

Re: Little help please.

Have you checked to make sure your choke plates are wide open at full throttle and the spark has fully advanced?

Re: Little help please.

Sticky spark advance timer base. No spark on one cylinder. Carbs not as clean as you think they are (High speed orfice).

One thing about it, you probably don't have an alternator any more after running with no battery.

Re: Little help please.

It could have a been the throttle advance lever:eek:. I had problems with that in the begining. The cables were loose, and at idle the lever was not full back this caused the motor to rev up really high at idle:mad:. Could the throttle advance lever sticking or something cause to kill my RPMs at WOT:confused:. I dont have a seperate alternator. just whatevers under the fly wheel. Should my battery be charging at idle:cool:. How doi check that. Could I have caused any problems running it without the battery connected. Any more suggestions welcome.:)

Re: Little help please.

you just learned a valuable lesson, allways, start on muffs, before leaving home. check charging voltage at 2500 + do run above 1500 on muffs. do not run without battery. also make sure you have telltale stream.

Re: Little help please.

Put your voltmeter leads on the battery terminals, + to+ etc. Should read close to 12V with engine off. After running awhile, the voltage will increase if the alternator is working. The alternator is under the flywheel. If you don't have power trim, the rectifier is that little cylindrical thingy with two yellow wires and a red one. If you do have power trim, the rectifier is combined with a voltage regulator. Running without a battery will toast the rectifier.

If you have power trim you are looking at an expensive replacement on that rectifier... I paid over $200 for a new one on my 84' 140. I'm pretty sure running without the battery pretty much always cooks it.

Re: Little help please.

So, i went out today after registering the trailer and buying another rebuilt prop instead of fixing this prop. So i was out at the boat and i ran the trrottle up and down with the engine off and the throttle advance lever went fully forward almost every time. But what i did find in the fuel filter was about a gram of this tan goo. Kinda like this tan paste in the filter. Any clue what this stuff is.

Tan Goo: Chinesse noodle, egg and tofu veggie, stirfry...

Sound like Permatex copper gasket sealer. Don't know how it would end up in the fuel system.
