First just want to introduce myself - newbie to the site. Been boating all my life - kind of backyard mechanics - at least on cars. Looks like a great site with a lot of good information. Hopefully I will be able to contribute to other topics as I build up my knowledg base.

Problem I have is with a 6hp Johnson Seahorse that was given to me. I'm guessing it is a 1960's model. Person who gave it to me told me it ran about 15 years ago.

Well tried to start and having a heck of a time. I was able to get it running after a hundred or so pulls. Ran it for 5 minutes seen that that impeller must be bad since nothing came out of pee-hole (another issue for later day). Once it cooled down - Went to restart - same problem - another 100 pulls

Here is what I've done.

1. Checked that fuel was going to carb - pumped ball up removed hose from carb - steady stream. During cranking it was only spitting gas no stream but I was guessing that was normal until motor catches. Since it did run when started I was assuming pump ok anyway.

2. Took off carb and jets and soaked it and blew everything out - did not looked gummed up.

3. Pulled flywheel - reset points off a little.

4. Check for spark. Was not a blue spark but some was there - I thought it looked a little weak but not sure of how big of a spark I should see with this motor - use to cars. Could not see it too well so I put a screwdriver and held on to to see if I got shocked which I did (my dad use to make me do this when I was kid - funny guy :())

5. Pulled plugs and they looked dry (after pulling a bunch of time). Making me think that it is a fuel problem. Was not sure again not a lot of expereince with outboard - but with all the crannking I was doing. Its like it is Not enough gas pulled in to cylinders?

May be chasing a number of problems. Any help or advice would be appreciated. thanks in advance

Thanks I actually did stumble onto this site during weekend. Followed tips to get carb off and cleaned. Still a little stuck. I was trying to spray starter fluid to get it going. Will try squirting just some premix. Read somewhere that if it started after doing that it would be a gas issue. Will try it this evening. Appreciate anymore tips anyone may have. thanks

spark should jump a 1/4" air gap with an air gap spark tester...the points have to be really clean to function properly, acetone works well to clean them...with the carb inverted, did you set the float level so it's parallel with the carb casting?..plugs gaped at .030?...you may have to rebuild the carb before all is done and said..as well as replace the spark plug wires and terminals...did you check the compression with a gauge?

Did clean points with an emery cloth. changed plugs and gapped at .035. Did not check compression. Pulled plugs and put thumb over and felt air pushing. What the best way to test compression?

with a compression gauge..most auto parts places have a deal so you can get a refundable deposit if you return it within 48 hours...or buy one for $30 or so....harbor freight has an adequate one for most diy stuff....the emory cloth may have left some grit behind, you can pull some paper through the points to help remove it..just let the points close on the paper and pull it through

Put gas in carb throat did not fire. Did compression test - 5 pulls around 55 to 60 pounds each cylinder. Did get some spark when doing spark test - I thought it was a little weak but person helping thought it was a good blue spark. Now I'm a little stumped. Could bad condensers still give a spark but keep from starting? I'm ready to buy noew coils, points, and condensors but just don't want to throw money at it. Any other suggestions?

Hi Rmsari. While I would suggest getting new points and condensers, you may be able to keep your coils. If they do not appear to be damaged in any way, they're probably ok. However, you should get some new spark plug wires. No sense in getting new points and such, if you're gonna use the same old wires. You'll need to get 7mm copper or stainless steel core spark plug wires. Graphite core wires for cars will not work. NAPA and Carquest often sell it for about $3 a foot. 10-12 feet is plenty to wire both cylinders. Be sure to get some new crimp on 90 degree ends and rubber boots. Make sure you twist the new wires on to the coil too, rather than just poking them on there. You'll be amazed at the difference they make. Between the new points and condensers ($15), spark plugs and wires ($35), you'll have a virtually new ignition system for about $50. The spark should jump 1/4" gap once everything is hooked up. Keep us posted. Good luck.
