I don't have a built-in livewell. Have been using a cooler. I'd like to install a freshwater pickup so I can pump the cooler full. It is in the front of an 18ft. BlueFin. Where is the freshwater pickup usually placed?

Re: Live Well Pickup

Your best bet, if you are going to use a cooler for a live well, or a bait tank, is to make you a water wand. Mount a bilge pump on the end of a piece of PVC (making a water wand), and you can just dip it over the side, to fill your cooler, and then dip it into the cooler to drain it, and with differtent plumbing options can also use it for aireation. This will be better in one way, as inlets for live wells usually always pick up at the rear of the boat, where the motor is, where you are more apt to get oil/fuel contamination from the motor/exhaust, also, normal pickups draw fromm close to the surface, wheere oil/fuel floats, whereas you can stick your water pole/water wand below the surface farther, to get fresher cleaner water. Also with your pickup pole system, you can get your fresh water from anywhere around the boat. This is the system, I have been using, it is very good for filling, and emptying bait tanks also, and comes in handy for many things, such as draining rainwater, and for washdowns. Every boat needs one. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Thanks for the idea. Better than poking holes in hull and running a bunch of tubing.
