Hello

I just bought a deck boat and the live well doesn't work. There is a hole in the bottom. Is there something I can buy to fix it. I am quite new and have no idea. Any info will be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Live well

Does the livewell pump work? All livewells have a hole to drain the water. Is the hole you refer to something else? Fixing a hole would depend upon the material of the livewell. Most are aluminum or plastic.

Re: Live well

First, the boat needs to be in the water to test the live well. Second, the pump needs to work. The pump takes in water through a port at the stern. Pumps it to the areator head in the live well. There are a couple different types of live wells. If the live well has an overflow near the top of the tank you need a plug for the drain hole in the bottom. Water fills the tank and then overflow goes out the top. If there is no overflow, then you need a standpipe that sticks into the hole in the bottom of the tank. The pump then fills the tank and overflow goes down the tube and out the drain. If you don't understand what a standpipe is, take the lid off your toilet. The pipe in the middle is a standpipe.

Re: Live well

OK here's what I am saying. the live well is a box on the floor of the boat it has a hole on the bottom. Don't know what is suppose to be in it. If there is a pump don't see any. Then on the side there is a tube which is capped off. Thanks to those that suggested general questions I will go there as well.

I don't even know the terminology of boating. Just got boating for dummies :) hope it helps

Re: Live well

I'd Google "livewell". That'll show different sites that will show the basic way they work. There are a few different set-ups. Sounds like you need to buy some parts to make yours complete. If there is a label telling you who made it, start with the manufacturer's website.

Re: Live well

It sounds like the livewell has been screwed with. The line that is capped off is the overflow. The hole in the bottom is the drain. The livewell is no good if there is no pump. The pump by the way, is normally located in the bilge at the back of the boat.

Thanks guys I am going to look for the pump and as for Googling live well I have been doing that. I also went to general questions cant seem to find anything. I appreciate all you are telling me.

This site is awesome you guys are terrific. Thanks and I will continue to try and figure this all out with the help of books and all of you who knows I just might become a true captain :)

You said The pump is normally located in the bilge at the back of the boat.
So shouldn't there be something in the live well besides the hole like a tube or something coming in from the bottom or something?

Re: Live well

There should be a hose coming from the live well pump going into the live well. There should be a second hose from the live drain which takes the water back out of the boat.

My intake hose is at the top of my livewell. The return is hooked to the drain at the bottom of the tank. Mine uses a stand pipe on the drain as was already described. My pump is in the transom itself. It picks up water through a hole in the transom that is covered with a plastic screen thing. My return hose also drains through the transom. Both of these are below the water line.

Re: Live well

There should be a a spray bar or aerator at the top of the live well. The capped line he mentioned is either the overflow or it is an input for the areator. At this point we can't even be sure if this is a livewell. If may just be an in-floor storage compartment with a drain. If there is no "Livewell" or "Pump" switch on the console to turn the pump on and off there probably is no livewell pump.

Re: Live well

OK guys/gals I think I figured it out. I will take a pic and post but it's pooring here today in Port Richey.

I found the switch on the dash, turned on the battery and hit the switch. Heard something indication pump. went looking for it found it Kewl.
Next I think that the hole in the bottom of the live well is for maybe an overflow pvc type thing . Went to Wally world (WALMART) didn't find anything so I will go to a marine shop Do you think I am right? Also I was wondering if I am could I just stick a piece of PVC that fits?

Thanks

Re: Live well

Ummmm -- remember my first description about a standpipe. That's what goes in there. It is nothing more than a piece of PVC pipe with a rubber fitting on the end that sticks in the hole. Unless that pipe fits tightly, the water will just leak out again. Go to a boat dealer and ask them to show you one so you know what you are looking for. The pipe must be shorter than the depth of the tank. Water then fills the tank until it runs over into the pipe and drains out the back of the boat. But since you have heard the pump run, how does the water get INTO the tank? You haven't figured that out yet. Did the switch you turned on say BILGE, LIVEWELL, or AERATOR?

Re: Live well

It said live well The boat isn't in the water yet. When the weather turns for the better I will get it in. The pump turned on yet is it working not sure. However I did find the pump and so I will replace it if it doesn't work. AS for the overflow I see it is just a piece of pvc. Checked with the Marine store they want 17.00 for it seems like alot to me . Found a PLACE ON LINE 6.97. I could probably just add a rubber to the bottom of pvc and insert can't I

Re: Live well

Work with us here. You still have not figured out how water gets INTO the tank. Until you figure that out, you may end up pumping your boat full of water so don't spend money until you have a grip on how this system works.

Re: Live well

he already described a spray bar... he may also have an overflow he hasn't found yet and a remote controlled drain.... best bet is drag it up to the old timer at the bait shop and say "I'd like some 'minners' and btw how does this live well work?"
