livewell overfill drain

Ok, if I am building my livewell, do I just put a hose or pipe that comes through the livewell at the level I want it to start draining and make sure that the hose is lower on the hull of the boat so it creates a gravity effect for the water to drain out?

Obviously it has to be above the water line on the side of the hull, but is it ok to do what I said, just make sure the hose in angling down so it drains out?

also, do most people screen off the over fill drain so that you dont lose bait?

Everything you suggest is how the factory setup the livewell in my Crestliner.

The permanently mounted overflow tube has a screen on it, the pull drain tube does not.

my lund has a bottom drain that you can plug or put a piece of 3/4 pcv pipe into cut to the length that you want the water to be deep. sort of like the stand pipe inside of a toilet tank the prevents overflow if the valve sticks. when the water reaches the height of the pipe the water just goes down the pipe and out the drain hose. the hose goes to the stern of the boat and goes out thru the transom at just about the water line. when you want to drain the livewell just pull the pipe out and it drains. lund's system gives you a little flexability of water depth by changing the lenght of the stand pipe albeit the water can only be so deep or shallow.
