hey guys I'm looking to build a live well into the deck of my starcraft as part of my re build. not really too sure what size live well is normal in most boats. i know I'm gonna be kinda limited to around 11 - 12 inches high, wondering how long and wide most are

Re: livewell size

The people I know that have livewells typically have them for tourneys and then it just depends on how big the fish your catching are.
If you just plan on using it for bait 12 inches wide should be fine, but bear in mind to make it round without sharp corners, the bait fish will swim into the ends of the tank if it isnt a circle and die.

Re: livewell size

i just did this in my rebuild. i fish off shore and want to carry a lot of bait with me so i did "over sized" livewells. mine are 11" high x 12" wide x 24" long. i have one on both rear corners of the boat, this is sorta "over sized" since my boat is a 17 1/2' boat. Round as stated above is best but least practical to build as far as space and lay out is concerned. next best is oval, make sure when you hook up the water "input" you have it set up where the flow (picture a whirl pool) of water will be going counter clock wise or your bait wil die real quick! on my build i made one of the live wells with the walls and floor 1" thick of foam. it can be a live well or a cooler and the floor is slanted so it is 100% draining. biggest concern though is the bigger the well the more bait you can carry and keep alive but the more it weighs and your boat will sit that much lower
