Hi there folks,

After a long absence from the board I'm finally back. During this abscence I've had the good fortune to visit your beautiful country. It was most certainly an eye opener and I believe you all have a lot to be thankful for.

I spent most of my time in ruralish areas and have to conclude the the average American's "way of life" gives me much to be envious of. The most striking fact was contrary to what I've always heard (rude and arrogant), the average American was friendly, polite, helpful and tolerant. People actually went beyond the call of duty to make me feel welcome.

Where I come from, we have become so cynical and distrusting of everybody. Everything is always locked away, people are always watched closely, nobody is trusted in case they try and rip you off. All I saw there was a total trust that everybody would do the right thing, women leave their purses in their shopping carts unattended, cars are left unlocked with keyes in the ignition, no front walls and razor wire surrounding homes to keep intruders out. What a way of life!

So guys, before complaining about what a crappy life you have, rather take a moment to reflect on how fortunate you really are. I believe that the American dream is still alive and well and that for those willing to put in the effort, the rewards will be there.
I have made up my mind that your society has a lot to offer me and my family and have decided to take the big step and immigrate. I also believe I can contribute my fair share in contributing to society. Only small snag at the moment is finding gainful employment that would be prepared to sponsor my visa application. I'm sure I'll eventually come right.

In closing, here's wishing y'all a belated but well meant prosperous 2004. Who knows, by next year this time I might be part of the great dream!

Welcome and good luck to you RA. Thanks for your testimony RE the 'ugly American'. ;)
There are quite a few of us that could stand to get out and about to witness the things you speak of. Us natives definately take a lot for granted in this country.

Majority of my time was spent just outside Denver CO visiting family. I also did a road trip through Utah, Nevada, California, Arizona back to Colorado as well as a trip to Springfield Missouri. I also spent a few days in New York and Atlanta. Springfield was just great!

that 'rude/arrogant american' has gotta stop.. it's gotta be the 'bissness men' or CIA or maybe colleage kids..

if anythin' it should be 'silly & fun lovin'"... americans are totally more fun an less uptite then most in the industrialized world..

but there is bad with the good.. an people are people,, an most are brought up to be kind, caring, an with manners.. especially to people from other countries..

yes, america is a great place to live..

lived here all my life.. i never seen a dead body on the ground or even a crime for that matter..

proof is ,,no one who comes over here to live ,,ever wants to go back an live..

must be somethin' to it..!!

Welcome back RA.
I've been wondering what happened to you. I remember you talking about loading everything(boat included) up in a shipping container, and moving here. Still have the boat with the twin 40's on the back?

You definitely visited some of the best areas of our country, in my opinion. There are some that are not quite as pleasant.

Do you have a profession?
A skilled or semi skilled job?
Perhaps we could recommend employers if we knew a bit more about you.
Good Luck.

If you want to come to this country you should come through Mexico and claim to be a Mexican! No Hablo espanyo! We will roll the red carpet out for ya!

Other wise youll have to go through all kinds of greif!

This is intended to be a bit on the funny side, but a lot of truth to it!!

Welcome back and thanks for reminding us how fortunate we are!

Anyone coming into this country legally will get a great big hug and welcome from me! all others, stay out!! Ya, I know Im a hard nose!!

I think most people who havent been to our country think we are rude an arrogant. That is why, I believe, that a good chunk of the world does not like us.

We as individuals are good people and I love this country.

I am living the American dream and I am extremely proud to be an American.

I hope you have a smooth transition to our great nation.

Good luck Mr. Rudeafrican.. :)

"rude an arrogant" .. It's here.. You'll find it in south Florida... Maybe the US should just clip off the southern tip of florida, say just north of orlando, an let it float off into the carabiean... Yeah, that'd be about right... :D

i've been told new york city is a rather miserable place as well..

Hi again guys

Appologies for the delayed response, it has to do with the fact that there is a 9 hour time difference between us!

Thanks for all your words of encouragement. To answer a few specific questions:

mikeandronda: I am currently employed as an IT consultant at a large commercial bank. My skills include Cobol programming (loved it!) C programming, Unix and Linux administration and specific in check processing software application.
But I'm also a jack of all trades, I can weld, do plumbing, electrical work, floor and wall tiling, building (brick and mortar) as well as reasonable mechanical skills.

Roscoe: that's me roscoe! still toying with the idea of loading my boat in the same container as my furniture/household effects. Don't know how practical that is!

Practical? who knows.
Essential? Yes. Bringin a little of the old life here, to start the new life.

Sounds like you have some skills, and should be able to find a sponsor, with a bit of effort. A good employment broker (headhunter) should be able to help.
