My computer is a Emachine 566MHz intel seleron processor with ME.
I don't know if that is relevent or not, but here is what happens when I put a CD in my computer.
A normal computer, when you put a CD in it will start to load about 2-10 seconds after closing the CD tray.
My computer did that for the first year I had it, but now when I put a CD in it, I have to go to "my computer" and double click on it, then click on CD and manually install whatever is on the disk that I put in the computer.
Why did it change from loading it itself, and now making me load it manually?
I have never changed anything on my computer to make it do this.
Does anyone know why it changed?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Loading a CD onto my computer

Okay I went to do what the instructions said, but it didn't work.
I clicked on "Hkey_current_user", but on the right of the screen was supposed to be: NoDriveTypeAutoRun.
On my puter it had 3 options:
(Default)"C:\Aol Canada 5.0\"
HTTP11Saved 0x00000000(0)
HTTP11Saved 0x00000000(0)

So I can't do what the instructions tell me to do.
I'm stuck.
Any more help Xcusme or Ndemge please, thanks.

Re: Loading a CD onto my computer

Were you able to toggle the auto insert notification by following the text from the website link??

To wit:
To activate Autoplay for all CDs for all versions of Windows 9X and Me, click Start, Programs, Setting control Panel, System, Device Manager, expand CDROM by clicking the +, select the desired CD-ROM drive, Properties, Setting tab, check the Auto insert notification checkbox, and click OK.

It's probably best to avoid the registry if you're new to editing registry values.

Re: Loading a CD onto my computer

brother chris,

You might want to check to see if your version of Windows is using Real Mode or Protected Mode drivers for your CDROM drives. Windows will not automatically play cd's when you are using Real Mode drivers.

How do you check which drivers your version of Windows is using?? Click the Performance tab in the System Properties dialog box (control Panel) and look to see if your cdroms are using MS-DOS Compatibility mode. If you see MS-DOS Compatibility mode, then you're using the Real Mode drivers.

Most CDroms support protected mode drivers, depending on the age of your computer. Since you stated that at one time you were able to have auto insert notification working, then you did at one time had the Windows protected mode drivers installed. Perhaps the installation of a game installed the real mode drivers. If you edit your config.sys and autoexec.bat files (in the root folder of C drive) you may see references to Mscdex. This line loads the real mode drivers before you get into Windows. You can edit the file and place the word REM (plus a space) in front of the command line. This will 'remark' out the line and the driver will not be loaded when you start windows.

All of this stuff above can be found in these links:

CDROM Stuff

More CDROM Stuff
