loading carb problem

After turning off my 200hp johnson after wot or close to that, does not want to start back up the first time i try and sometimes even the second try. I have even sat at idle after the runs to help cool it down slower [so I was told thats what it does] and have putted at slows speed to but that does not seem to work either. A mechanic told me the carbs were probably loading up. When it starts after the runs it smokes, spits, water pressure is very low then dies in about 3 seconds. I let it sit for 30 seconds and then it starts up slow, but then kicks in. If i give it gas in neutral it still smokes alot but 3 quarters of the time will keep running. Any advice about if this is what they call loading carbs, and how to correct the problem

Re: loading carb problem

diggs....give us a little history here...

Year or model number.

When was the last time the carbs were overhauled and the sync and link done?

Spark plugs and compression numbers? Good spark to each cylinder?

What's the condition of the fuel lines? Soft and plyable or hard?

Water pump...good engine temp on both banks of cylinders? Impeller been changed lately along with the t-stats?

Sorry for all the questions diggs...but history helps.

Re: loading carb problem

Its a 1996 J200STLEDM, carbs were rebuilt about 2 or 3 years ago. Spark was tested few weeks ago and all was well, compression was 100 100 98 98 100 100. Had the primer ball and that fuel line replaced this year. Put a new water pump in a few weeks ago. Adjusted carbs twice this year - was running too lean- had lean sneezing.

If the gas is old I would suspect crud in the carbs even though you had them done a couple of years ago. Crud likes carbs even if they were just rebuilt. Do you have a fuel/water seperator?

No I do not have a fuel/water seperator. Do you recommend one?

I would guess you need a carb rebuild job

But before you do that I would run some seafoam thru your gas following the directions on the can and it might just solve your problem also.

Re: loading carb problem

Might also take a look at the primer solenoid diggs. Make sure the red lever is in the "AUTO" position...straight back. Pull one of the carb primer lines and crank the engine without "choking" with the key. Make sure no gas is pumping out the primer line.

Check your recirc hoses aren't broke or lose from the connections.

Have you noticed any leaking around the bowls? The "plastic" bowls are prone to warpage and will leak.

I would consider a carb cleaning and overhaul as the other guys suggested. Making adjustments for a lean sneeze means the engine is not getting the fuel it should. Was the engine was running good and this problem cropped up making you make adjustments or did you inherit the problem?

Re: loading carb problem

I will check the primer solenoid to make sure red lever is in the right position. My hoses and connections are all good. I have not noticed any leaking but I will check again. The sneezing problem just came about and thats why adjustments were made. Happened when I first bought it [used] and corrected the problem and after a couple years [now that is] it happened again.
I just bought a can of seafoam and Im going to burn the fuel in my tank now and then hopefully tomorrow I will fill up and run the seafoam. Thanks for all the suggestions hopefully now I can get this thing running right. Time to get to work
