1988 75 horse mariner 3cyl., after a minute or so of trolling engine starts to miss and i need to increase engine speed to prevent stalling, with this i get a excessive amount of blue smoke, engine starts and runs fine otherwise, i checked the oil pump alignment and looks fine, i recently replaced spark plugs and compression is 120 "cold engine" even on each cylinder. does something go bad in pump or am i more likely having a carb idle mixture problem that is creating a missfire and the unburnt oil.
Also is it normal for fuel only to flow through enricher solenoid when engine is all the way down. my set up prevents me from lowering engine all the way in driveway and it makes it hard to start for flushing since fuel doesn't flow from carb until engine is nearly vertical. any thoughts greatly aprreciated

I went though this too last year. I bought my boat to my dealer that rebuilt the carbs and put a fuel water separator in at a cost of $530 . This didn't fix my problem. after 2 weeks of still dealing with this I dump out my oil tank and ran mercury oil that help then I replace my plugs and plug wires. I never had I problem again it ran 100% better. $30 in plugs and wire plus the oil did the trick. hope this saves you from what I went though :D

thanks , definately worth a try, i am just running whatever the walmart brand oil is. tech something, it used to work okay in my old premix 9.5 tiller johnson . did you use the regular mercury oil or a synthetic? i guess try the cheap fixes first. thanks my friend

Why are you trying to remove plug wires. You either have spark or you don't. Check it. When the engine stalls, pull the plugs to see if they are fouled. If you have spark (sharp blue snap) then you very likely have carb problems. We can't see or hear your engine. All we have to go on is what you tell us. The engine needs spark, fuel, and air and it all needs to happen at the proper time (ignition timing) in order to run. How old is the fuel? Are you a user of fuel system treatments like Stabil or Sea Foam which is especially important if you don't use large amounts of fuel at any one time. As for the enrichener, it should not pass fuel except when the key is pushed in for initial starting (providing this is the cold start enrichener).
