Looking for a good local mechanic (non-dealer) in the South NJ/PA Philadelphia area to tune up a 1996 Evinrude 25HP 2 stroke and fix a tilt pin.

I don't want to mess up by trying to do myself.

All of the dealers here are booked 3 weeks. I mainly don't want to leave my newly restored '68 Whaler in their yard.

Thanks for any input.

Dave

Re: Local NJ Mechanic for 25HP tune

Hi Dave, I think if your able to find this board you can do the tune up your self. Theres not alot to do! Just pull the two plugs and buy new ones gap them and put them back DONE! Drop lower unit oil, go to Walmart and buy 1 qt of new oil, buy hand pump.Pump it up from bottom hole till it comes out top hole DONE. Put top plug in put bottom one in. Depending on the Hrs you use the boat and motor your water pump shoould be just fine . Its not like the old days and the pumps needed replacement everyother year. These are good for quite along time. I am in Toms River NJ
Where are you?
steve

Re: Local NJ Mechanic for 25HP tune

Steve -
Thanks for the reply. I did change the lower unit gear oil myself and did replace the plugs with proper gap. I thought there might be more to it than that as far as cleaning the carb, adjusting the needle valves. For that I thought I should just have an OMC tech do it, but for now it is running great, so I will hold off and keep learning from this forum.

The motor is a 1996, but very low hours. I have only started it a few times since I bought it last fall. I had trouble cold starting it last weekend when I put in water for the first time. Maybe due to the winterizing and fogging oil put in there.
Since then I have started it and it keeps starting easier and quicker. I learned I needed a better gas line primer bulb and to squeeze it with the arrow pointing up. I have a better understanding now of the electric key choke too.
I am going to keep clean by running some Engine Tuner through it this weekend when I put it back in the water. Also, I plan to use the carbon guard in the gas tank as well.

thanks for the encouragement.

Dave
