Can anyone give me some advice?

I had some work done on the engine of our Searay and while everything was fine at the time, the fact it?s been sitting idle for the last year or so seems to have thrown up another glitch.

I tried starting it the other day and got nowhere ? it wouldn?t even turn over, just kept making a clicking sound every time I?d turn the key. I thought it might have been the batteries of course, so I charged them up, but still nothing happened. I even took out the battery from my van, thinking the boat batteries might have died, but it made no difference.

I called our mechanic, a really great guy over in Daytona, for his advice (I?m about 60 miles away so I?d just as soon avoid the drive over there with my boat unless I have to) and he told me that it sounded like one of two things, ether the slade solenoid (I hope I spelt that right) or the starter motor.

He tried describing to me how to locate the solenoid near the fuel filter, but I can?t figure what he means ? I know where the fuel filter is, as I?ve replace it, but can?t see anything nearby that looks electrical.

Can anyone take a look at the accompanying picture and tell me where it is? I also, if memory serves correctly, think I?ve seen an engine jumped before by laying a screw driver across two terminals on the engine ? is that what the mechanic is talking about to test the solenoid?

Sorry for sounding so moronic ? engines aren?t my strong suit! The motor concerned is an Alpha One V8 5.0, if that helps.

It's called a "slave" solenoid. Trace the wire back from the starter - it leads back to the slave solenoid. Also, look at the "adults on'y" sticky at top - I believe Don has posted a thread about how to check for a no start situation like yours.

Before you do that, You might want to put a wrench on the harmonic balancer bolt and try turning the motor over by hand.
If it turns over. Disconnect your battery cables, wire brush them and reinstall them and try using the batteries again. If you are using wing nuts to attach your cables to the battery, throw those damned things away. Those cables aren't correctly installed if you can remove them by hand.

Ayuh,... I Agree, corroded cable Ends could very well be the Problem,...
I'll add, that it Could be the Other ends of the Battery Cables,...
Where they meet the Starter,+ the block...
