Locating Transmission Cooler?

On a Velvet Drive tranny the transmission cooler (replaced and relocated by PO) is mounted appx. 18" above the tranny and a few inches above the heat exchanger. Is this the correct location?

Common sence (don't have much) tells me I won't get a proper reading on the dipstick. The fluid (I think) would drain out of the cooler into the tranny at rest. Would that give me an errant reading of fluid level?

Thanks!

I found this at this site (http://www.velvetdrive.com/techinfo/liberty/libertyowners.pdf), don't know if it is the same as your tranny, but might help.

"Transmission fluid will drain back
into the transmission from the cooler and
connecting lines after engine shutdown. Fluid level
must be checked immediately after engine
shutdown otherwise the dipstick reading will not
be accurate and transmission could be operating
with insufficient fluid."

Thanks for the response, stony.

I found that file and looked it over before posting, but I'm not sure of the location of the cooler. This one is aftermarket and appears to be much larger than needed. Holds alot of fluid.

I'll post a photo as soon as I can get my lady off her boat. She's fishin'.

Howdy,

Well, you're not being let down.....There's just not a LOT of people that know a lot about the V-drives.

I don't have one but a quick Google search produces a LOT of info.

From what I could find, most of the V-drives hold about 3qt of fluid.

Figure 5, pg 3 in the last link I posted, indicates that you should mount the cooler so that it will NOT drain back into the trans.

Practically though, understand that those coolers probably hold about 1/2 cup or so. I don't think you're talking about a LOT of fluid in any case....

Cheers,

Re: Locating Transmission Cooler?

Seems like no matter the cooler size the problem is still the same, transmission fluid level while the engine is running is what is important. In your case it seems a cold reading would say you are overfull, but while running would be OK. A hot reading immediately after shutdown would still seem to be the way to go. Not that I know what I am talking about, just kind of makes sense:D.

Super, Rick :)

Much appreciated info, cooler down low.

I surf as well on the computer as the ocean, not well. I thought I looked well enough, guess not.

As always, another problem solved by your help.

To prevent all the oil from coming out of the cooler, make sure the oil fittings are on TOP of the cooler when installed, not on the bottom, then you only loose the oil in the lines. While you may have an older 71,72, or 73 series. with or without vdrives and reduction gears, the procedure for checking hot and cold are the same as shown in Stoneys link to the liberty manual in the beginning of this thread.

Ah hah, thanks Don.

Makes sence to me, on top it will be. She was mounted exactly, yep exactly, where she shouldn't have been.

Yes.

It's a shame that some people cannot just read and follow simple directions......

Why is there never enough time to do it right the first time,
But always enough time to do it again?
So true!!

The PO usually had a marina do the work.....and that's not the only thing I found I didn't like. Take for instance the new fuel fill hose was stuffed inside the deck fill.

Just because it was done at a "Marina", don't assume that ANYTHING is done correctly! ;)
